My dog ate garlic bread. Is his vomiting from garlic poisoning?

My 20lb Pomsky ate a small bite of garlic breadstick and a few hours later was vomiting and a bit lethargic. Should I be worried about garlic poisoning?

Garlic toxicity causes anemia and signs of it wouldn't show up this fast. I'm concerned it's the breadstick itself that has upset Skye's stomach. I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Hi my mother in law gave my dog a small amount of fish that contained garlic and onion last night. Today my dog has been sick with some vomiting. Do I need to take her to the vet?
Hello, and thank you for using Boop by Petco. While onion and garlic are toxic to dogs, their toxicity is dose-dependent so a small amount of fish flavored with a little onion and garlic would most likely not contain enough to be toxic, unless the dish was really loaded with onions/garlic. Onions and garlic cause destruction of red blood cells and anemia, which would cause a dog to be lethargic with pale gums. If Sady is sick and vomiting today, I suspect it's more likely GI upset from getting something different from her normal diet, rather than being directly related to the onions & garlic. She would feel better fastest if you took her to the vet and got something to calm her GI tract down, but if she's otherwise acting pretty normal you could try offering her small amounts of bland food today such as boiled lowfat chicken breast and white rice, and if she's still vomiting tomorrow then have her seen by your vet. This is likely not enough garlic to pose a serious risk of toxicity. At worst, you may see some mild stomach upset. Withhold food for 24 hours and feed a bland diet in small, frequent amount until symptoms resolve.

There is no home remedy for garlic toxicity (if that is what he has). Garlic toxicity results in oxidative damage to the red blood cells (making the red blood cells more likely to rupture) - you cannot fix this at home. He needs to see a vet for this issue. I am glad you were able to empty her stomach after vomiting. I would watch her closely for 24 hours for signs of GI upset (vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea), either from the hydrogen peroxide or from garlic oils. Garlic toxicity can cause problems with red blood cells, and this may take days or even weeks to show up. Symptoms can include lethargy, pale gums, increased breathing rate. My dog ate some pieces of bread that had a little garlic powder on them. This was yesterday and the day before that. Today he ate some grass and now vomited twice. Is this related to the garlic? He weighs about 50+ lbs.
I don’t think so - garlic and onions can cause anemia by damaging the red blood cells and symptoms are usually lethargy and a decreased appetite. It would also take much more than a few sprinkles of powder to cause a problem. If the vomiting continues I’d recommend seeing your vet.

Some gragettos garlic rye bread dropped on the ground. A small piece the size of a quarter. I think Zeus ate it. Do I need to take him to the vet?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Ideally, you have Zeus evaluated by a veterinarian for induction of vomiting if this happened within the last hour. However, in reality this should be a very small amount and he should be fine even without inducing vomiting as this was a very small amount. Good luck and have a great day!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Koda! My biggest concern is the butter more than the garlic especially now that she is vomiting. High amounts of fat can cause severe gastro-intestinal upset and/or pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can be mild (just vomiting, diarrhea, not eating) to very severe. Garlic causes oxidative damage to the red blood cells causing an anemia. A lot of it probably could cause stomach upset. Since it has been 12 hours and now she is coughing I would get her seen as soon as possible by your Vet. Good luck!

withhold food for 12 hours then offer Jayden boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if she is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put her back gradually on her normal food. If she continues vomiting or is not eating, take her to the vet to get treatment.
