My dog coughing and gagging after vet visit, is it throat irritation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 7 months old | 32 lbs

My dog went to the vet today for limping. He was diagnosed with mild bone inflammation and was given rimadyl. He did not take any yet. As soon as we got home he began coughing a dry cough and was gagging. He has has two episodes of coughing. He was put on a lasso collar at the vet. Could mild throat irritation be the cause? I was just at the dr for an unrelated issue and I do not want to go back. I am concerned that this began as soon as we got home. Could it be post stress related?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Ralphie. Poor boy. Yes, this could be due to mild throat irritation. Give him plenty of water, and try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity may help to soothe his throat. I don't think you need to take him back into a vet now, I'd just keep an eye on him. I hope this helps!
