My dog is drooling and throwing up yellow foam. Is it acid reflux?

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | neutered | 4 years and 4 months old | 70 lbs

Hello, My dog has begun salivating profusely before mealtimes. This has been occurring for about a month. Also, he has been vomiting foamy yellow-ish liquid once every 2-4 days. He has not eaten anything ordinary, and there are no changes to diet or environment. I understand it may be an acid-reflux issue, that I could try giving him pepcid 30 min before he eats. What are your recommendations?

Yes, this could be due to acid reflux, but I can't say for certain without seeing Leo in person. In addition, it's illegal for me to recommend taking any OTC medication. I would have him seen by a vet for this problem. The vet can diagnose what is causing his issues and can treat him. Best of luck.

Hello. Acid reflux can result from several things, not just the production of acid in response to food in the stomach. Esophageal disease/motility disorders, diet, over-secretion of pepsin & non-specific inflammation can all contribute to the problem. It may be as simple as switching to a sensitive skin/stomach formulation of dog food, or an actual GI diet or one geared toward allergies such as Prescription Diet z/d. Adding an acid reflux medication such as famotidine or omeprazole is often a pretty safe option to try. Talk to your vet about what might be the best option for Gemma. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

My 5 month old puppy throws up white and yellow foam, coughs as if he were choking but wasn’t. Usually this happens at night and the vomiting early in the morning. I’m really worried. Is it due to not eating enough ?
This could very well be caused by acid reflux due to an empty stomach. Especially if Toby is otherwise acting normal and not vomiting up undigested food. I would try offering him a late night snack and ask your vet if an antacid dosage can be provided, considering his medical history. Best wishes with your puppy and I hope the vomiting resolves soon!

It is very possible she has an acid reflux problem. However, other underlying illnesses should be ruled out as well, especially early stage kidney disease. I would recommend taking her in to your vet for baseline bloodwork analysis to start. If she checks out fine, then a short trial of antacids can be started to see if this helps reduce or eliminate her vomiting episodes. Feeding her smaller, more frequent meals, can also help if she has an acid reflux problem. Best of luck with Boozo. Take care.

This could be simply acid reflux since he only eats once a day. Some dogs will vomit bile when they don't eat often enough because the acid will build up in their stomachs. I would feed 2 times per day to see if this helps. If he is still vomiting bile, I would have your vet take a look at him to ensure nothing more serious is going on. Your vet could also tell you a antacid brand and dose that would be safe for him depending on his medical history. I hope this helps!

This could be due to acid reflux. You can try an ant acid medication such as omeperazole to see if it helps. If you don’t see improvement in 1 to 2 weeks, you should follow up with your veterinarian for diagnostics including bloodwork and X-rays.

Chronic vomiting can be frustrating especially since everything you have tried so far. I know you have been to the vet a lot but Led does not to go back tonhave radiographs or an ultrasound done to look inside his abdomen and intestines and possibly a biopsy to find the underlying cause instead of symptomatic treatment.

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. If Leo is otherwise healthy and acting normal, I would recommend initiating a bland diet as outlined below. Continue feeding this at least 3 days beyond the resolution of the vomiting and then transition him back to his normal dog food. If the vomiting starts back up after transitioning him back to the dog food, I would do the bland diet again and then transition him to a completely different diet such as Science Diet, Royal Canin, Purina One or Natural Balance. If the vomiting continues or worsens, I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! My dog has been throwing up in middle of the night recently. Last night he did twice. This morning he won’t eat his food or a treat.
Poor Leo, I'm sure this is very worrying for you! There can be many different reasons why a dog may start vomiting, some easily resolved and some a bit trickier. Quite often it is simply down to an acid imbalance or irritation of the tummy lining. This can be similar to indigestion in humans and often ranitidine will help it. However, if Leo seems to be very poorly and off form it may be more serious. He could have an infection or may have eaten something he shouldn't have. If you think he is very poorly, the vomiting continues, he is not going to the toilet, is painful or you suspect he may have eaten a foreign body, then I would take him to the vet. The vet will be able to examine him and quickly establish if there is potentially something that warrants further investigation. Quite often dogs develop a bad bout of gastritis which can be resolved with medication. If you don't think he is too bad, and he is able to keep water down, you could see how he gets on at home. My puppy throws foam like every morning
Poor puppy. He may have an acid reflux problem. Get him examined by your vet just to ensure he is healthy otherwise, and then discuss with your vet about trying him on a short course of antacids to see if there is any improvement. You can also feed him smaller and more frequent meals, especially right before bedtime. You see most of these pets will vomit up foam because the stomach is empty and overloaded with acid, which then causes vomiting of clear liquid. I hope your puppy Oscar feels better soon!
