My dog is sad in the shelter. Do my visits make her miss me more?

Hi, my dog used to live with me. She was my everything I use to spend a lot of time with her but 4 months ago I was obligated to get her out of the house because of my dad's illness. Now she's living in a small shelter full of dogs. I visit her from time to time does this help her to feel better? Or am i just making her miss me and wait for me? I don't know what to do, she cries a lot she is always scared of the other dogs.

Wow this makes my heart hurt for you and Luna. I think visiting her is confusing her, makes her miss you. If you aren't able to move out on your own to take her back, then I would stop visiting her. I'm so sorry.

I'm so sorry you had to give away Finley, how heartbreaking for you! I don't think Finley would think he's coming back to you if you go and visit him. He's had time to adjust to his new home, and is likely very settled there. I'm sure he would be happy to see you, but he will likely view you as a visitor to his home. I think it would help you see him in his new home, and I would go visit him if you'd like :-)

I’m so sorry you have to give Volt up for adoption! That must be so hard for you. It would be fine to visit him but I wouldn’t do it regularly. He does need to adjust to living with his new family, and you have to respect their wishes about visiting as well. I hope this helps!

My dog was admitted to my local emergency hospital last night due to complications from Kidney Failure and Pulmonary Hypertension. He is staying overnight again tonight and possibly tomorrow night as well. My question is...is it better to not visit
Poor guy. I hope he gets well and is able to come home soon. Pet visits are absolutely welcomed and encouraged. Cats aren't as attached as dogs, but they do enjoy visits from their owners and this can boost morale and also the health of the pet has been shown to increase when there is an emotional tie to a present owner. I would encourage you to visit your pet Memi everyday he is there, twice daily if possible, and I hope he gets well soon!

From your description, if Miel is showing this crying behavior when you aren't around, it can be sign of separation anxiety. She is anxious when you leave and is afraid you may not be coming back. This can be a common problem in dogs. I recommend crating her when you are gone. The crate will provide her a small space where she can feel safe in it when you are gone. You will have to slowly train her to get used to a crate. Start putting her in it when you are home and sitting nearby so she doesn't think you are abandoning her, and slowly increase the time she is in it. She can have toys in the crate, and puzzle toys with treats in it that she has to figure out how to get the treats out. You can put a tablespoon of peanut butter in a Kong toy and freeze it in the freezer overnight, then give it to her in the crate. That will keep her occupied for a while. Finally, you can get a pheromone diffuser called DAP that helps dogs with anxiety and pair that will a DAP pheromone collar

Hello! If often takes some time for a pet to adjust to their brand new home and family. Most dogs need a few weeks to become confident and comfortable in their new environment. It would be helpful to know exactly what she is doing that is causing you to be concerned though. If you'd like to resubmit a question describing the possibly depressed or adjusting behavior (ie. hiding, pacing, licking, chewing, growling), I may be able to better advise. I hope this is helpful! Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. This can certainly be a confusing situation for Pepper, which may explain why he was confused when he returned the last time. If Pepper is going to a bad environment, I would try and talk this over with his previous owner and ensure him that Pepper is much better off in the environment he has been in the longest. Unfortunately, if he gave you temporary care of his dog, technically Pepper still is his dog. You could also ask the man if you could adopt Pepper from him and pay him an "adoption fee" and make it so that if you adopt Pepper, he no longer has ownership and is no longer allowed to take Pepper for visitation. Hi and thank you for your question. I am sorry you are having some behavior issues with Luna. Moving can be stressful for both pets and pet parents! Moving to a new area, new home, and the addition of changing to being an only dog is a lot of new changes all at once. Sometimes it just takes time for dogs to acclimate to their new life and new home. She is likely feeling a little insecure in her new place, but that is not unusual. Keep her busy with exercise. Lots of walks, lots of play time with you and gradually introduce her to new people making the experience positive with rewarding her for good behavior with a treat she really really loves. Lavander oil with an essential oil diffuser in your home can aide in calming the mood. Calming chews with L-Theanine in them can also help as well as a number of Rx medications that can help smooth the transition if you are finding yourself and Luna in a road block with progress. Also, working with a trainer around your area can be a very helpfu

It sounds like Luna is very scared. She has had a big change in her life and that can be very frightening for a dog. I would strongly suggest that you consult an animal behaviorist in your area. Be sure to find someone who uses positive reinforcement training methods rather than dominance theory or punishment. Luna does not need someone to be her Alpha. This type of dominance theory creates more fear in dogs and does not promote a safe, comfortable relationship long-term between a dog and their owner. I would not try to force Luna to do anything. It is better to coax her into a kennel if that is where you want her using treats. It is important that Luna feels safe and not threatened. If your dad does not feel that he can interact with Luna safely, I would recommend that her previous owner pick her up and have her boarded somewhere until the trainer can be consulted.
