My dog is skinny and hungry after puppies. Should I be concerned?

My 8 year old dog coco ate a chunk of chocolate cheese cake a couple of minutes ago while I was not looking. Will she get really sick cause she is not super big. Also I have another question. Coco had 4 puppies 5 weeks ago, but is not really nursing anymore. she has gotten way skinny than she has been every before she was pregnant. She is ALWAYS hungry no matter how much we feed her should I be concerned.

If it was not a big chunk of cheesecake, Coco may be ok but you could see some stomach upset in the form of vomiting or diarrhea. I'd keep an eye on her for now with that. As for getting a lot skinnier, this isn't normal and yes I would be concerned about this. I'd have her seen by a vet today for a health check. I hope this helps!

I recommend getting her seen by your vet for an exam and bloodwork. She could have parasites, also, voracious appetite without weight gain or weight loss is a sign of diabetes. It could be that the pups have worn her out. She should have been eating puppy food the whole time she was pregnant and nursing. If she was not, this could be partly responsible for her thin condition. Your vet will give you a treatment plan, based on the findings.

Is it normal for a first time dog mom who had 9 pups to drop so much weight? We are feeding her double what she use to eat but she is still so skinny.
9 pups will take a lot from a mother at any age, they do tend to lose a lot of weight when nursing the puppies. She will gain it back after they are weaned, make sure to feed her as much as she wants and feed her puppy food instead of normal adult food.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bella. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. You are correct that she is very thin. Some dogs can develop low blood calcium due to the large amount of milk require to feed growing pups. This typically occurs within the first three weeks of delivery. Her veterinarian may recommend bloodwork and even an x-ray to ensure that all pups have been delivered. In the meantime, feed her free choice water and a high quality puppy food to help her gain weight and maintain milk production. I would stop giving her tea a well. I hope this information helps!

My puppy is just a month old but she is super skinny. She still drinks her moms milk and eats puppy food but is still so skinny what should I do?
I'd have Princess checked out by a vet for this problem. It could be she is suffering from intestinal worms causing her to be so skinny, and the vet can check her feces under the microscope for signs of worms. There could be a medical cause behind her being so skinny, which the vet can check for as well. I'd make an appointment for her for tomorrow. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

She really needs to see a vet. I wish I could tell you something to do at home but that is not possible without knowing why she is showing those symptoms. Not only that, but those symptoms are very non-specific and could be from almost any disease process or illness that can affect a dog. Some examples would be: diabetes, thyroid disease, kidney disease, liver disease, Cushing's disease, parasites,....just to name a few. Hello. Genetics can be pretty tricky to interpret in dogs, especially if each parent was a combination of breeds. As long as Bella is eating & drinking well, active & engaged with all around her, I would not be too concerned about how she looks when compared to her litter mates. Is she up to date on her vaccines, wormed on a regular basis & on heartworm preventative? If she is well cared for, eats a name brand food & does not seem overly hungry, then changing her food will not probably change much. She is still young, & truthfully, staying a little thinner is actually healthier than being overweight. If you are concerned, a good evaluation by your veterinarian would confirm if there are any issues to be dealt with. But, all sounds pretty normal. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding ICE. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. I worry that nursing the pups has placed a huge toll on her body. If this is the case, eclampsia or low blood calcium can result. This can be very serious and requires prompt care. Her veterinarian will be able to diagnose this with a blood sample. Continue with what the vet told you to give. Dogs, especially puppies, always act hungry no matter what food you feed. When he is over the coccidia you can speak to your vet about increasing the food. If he is very skinny you need to help him gain weight slowly so he doesn't get re-feeding syndrome.

My five month old minature pinscher managed to take food out of the pantry and ate some chocolate covered peanuts last night. She hasn't vomitted but her belly is really big. What should I do?
Oh that was naughty of Francesca! It's good that she isn't vomiting, but it is concerning that her belly is really big. I'm not sure if she is still eating, drinking, going to the toilet normally, or otherwise behaving normally. Because I'm not sure of those things, I think it's best that she is seen by a vet if she is acting differently, not eating and drinking, or isn't using the toilet normally. Otherwise, I would continue to monitor her for now. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, and then feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. After that, slowly add back in her normal diet. Should she refuse to eat the bland diet, she vomiting the bland diet, she stops drinking water, she starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, I would have her seen by a vet right away.
