Why is my dog still yelping after taking carprofen medication?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old | 20 lbs

My dog was yelping, a couple of days ago, we went and they ended up giving medicine, which was carprofen. I was just wondering why I keep giving him the medication and he is still yelping? Is that normal? Or is it because he barely is recovering? I called the vet and they told me because it was barely his second day on the meds that he would still be yelping. Should I see if he yelps tomorrow and if he does take him to the vet? Or what? I dont know what to do.

I suspect Bon Bon is still in a bit of pain. You did the right thing by calling his vet for advice. Yes, it could be true because he hasn't had two full days of pain relief that he still may be a bit painful. This can be normal. Give it a few more days on the medication to see if that helps him. I recommend a phone call to your veterinarian to ask about additional pain medications. Some dogs are more sensitive than others. My own puppy needed a second prescription medication to make him more comfortable. Although most dogs do fine with just carprofen, it might not be enough for Bella. It doesn't mean anything is wrong, or concerning, but we don't want her to be painful.

Brought my dog 3 days ago to the vet, has neck pain. On tramadol methacarbamol and gabapentin. His yelping is less, but still there. Is it normal for him to still feel pain with all this med? It is noticeably less, but still there.
It can take a long time (2-4 weeks, in most cases) for symptoms to resolve completely with rest and medication. So as long as things are gradually improving, I would be patient and continue to follow your veterinarian's instructions :)

Since she is taking carprofen she should not be in severe pain. She is probably upset because she has to wear the cone. I am afraid you have to bear it out as she will try to "whine you into submission" ie hopes you will take the cone away. The whining should stop within two or three days. If she keeps whining for longer and you think something is wrong with her or if she gets pale mucous membranes, cannot urinate or stops eating you should take her back to the vet for a recheck,

Hi there. No, I would NOT give any extra doses of this medication. Carprieve (carprofen) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. These drugs are very effective for pain and inflammation and are commonly used in dogs, but using more than the recommended dosage can cause serious side effects such as stomach ulcers and internal bleeding. If you feel that Marcus is still painful even with the prescribed dose of his medication, I would recommend calling your veterinarian when their office opens in the morning. He/she can prescribe an additional pain medication for Marcus such as tramadol or gabapentin that can be given along with the Carprieve for additional pain relief, if needed.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sometimes it can take a bit longer for these medications to kick in. It is generally not recommended to use these medications more frequently than how they are recommended as that can result in undesirable side effects such as gastrointestinal side effects with carprofen and significant sedation with gabapentin. For that reason, it would best to wait till the morning if that is what was recommended by the prescribing veterinarian. If you are asking if these two medications can be given together 4 hours apart then the answer would be yes. Good luck!

My dog seems to be in pain and is avoiding putting weight on his leg. He’s a fairly old beagle. Could I give him some carprofen that I have leftover from another dog?
I wouldn’t recommend it -carprofen may not be safe for dogs that have underlying medical conditions like a sensitive stomach, kidney or liver disease. Older dogs are more likely to have an issue like this. If Goose was prescribed carprofen in the recent past it might be a little safer but otherwise I’d recommend talking to your vet first. Sadly there is not another over the counter pain option that I’d consider to be safer so if you feel he’s in significant pain you may want to consider seeing a vet tonight.

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to recommend any treatment or dosage of medications on Boop by Petco. Legally, a pet must be physically examined by a vet before any treatment can be prescribed or recommended. Rimadyl can be used for any muscular or joint inflammation or pain, so it is probably the right choice for Westley. If you get in touch with your local vets, they should be able to advise about the dose for Westley. You will also find Rimadyl dosage on the leaflet, that should be provided with the tablets that were prescribed for Winston.

Carprofen is an nonsteroidal antiinflammatory medication (NSAID) like aspirin or ibuprofen for humans. It's used daily for arthritis or other chronic pain, and short term for more acute/temporary pain. The half life is the amount of time it takes for half of the drug to leave the body (via the liver, kidneys/bladder, or gut). Carprofen can occasionally have side effects on the liver, so if he's going to be on it long term, it's usually recommended to check liver values after 2 weeks. That said, liver issues are rare. Intestinal upset (vomiting/diarrhea) are also possible side effects and if he had any of that you'd want to stop and figure out a different appropriate medication with his vet. With just 6 days of medication, no additional testing will be done. You can (and should, if that is how it was prescribed) give carporfen daily. Appropriate supplements could include fish oils and glucosamine and others, depending on what exactly is going on. I'd recommend asking about supplements f

As long as he is improving and signs are diminishing, continue to treat as directed by your veterinarian. If he stops improving, worsens or seems more painful then have him rechecked by your veterinarian. Elevate the water and food bowls. Restrict activity as much as possible and leash walk using a harness to alleviate cervical stress.

Marley ruptured his cruciate ligament a week ago. He has been on 100mg of carprofen, but recently has been urinating in house (which he never does0. Could this be a side effect of carprofen or side effect from the pain he's feeling.
This is not a typical side effect of carprofen with the most common side effects being gi in origin. Is your pet drinking more water as well? As these drugs (nsaids) can affect the kidneys increased thirst/urination is sometimes related to this. Other options could be he is sore and not making it outside as often or has a urinary tract issue (bladder/prostate). I would recommend a recheck with your family vet to check his kidney values and rule out a urinary tract issue. I hope this helps and thank you for using Boop by Petco!
