Dog constantly licking paws after meds. Is it allergies or anxiety?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | 7 years and 4 months old | 28 lbs

My small dog, 28 lbs was licking and chewing his 4 paws. My vet gave him Benadryl suspension, still chewing, gave Gabapentin too, still chewing, gave Trazodone too. He is needless to say sedated bad. What is happening to him? Pain, itch or severe anxiety? Will he ever stop attacking his paws?

I'm wondering if Koa has allergies, as chewing paws can be a sign of allergies. I'd ask his vet if this can be a possibility and discuss potentially using an allergy medication on him like Apoquel or Cytopoint. I'm sorry he's doing poorly!

The behaviors you are describing in Sydney could be due to anxiety or to allergies. A very common signs of skin allergies in dogs is excessive licking of the paws. Licking the couch and other things could just be a compulsion that he has developed from licking his feet so much. I would recommend having him checked out by your vet to see if allergies are the underlying problem. If they are your vet may recommend switching my food or starting an anti-allergy medication.

My dog inly itches and chews in her paws when shes alone or not playing. Is she actually itchy? or has allergies? Or is it most likely anxiety/boredo (She did have fleas before i got her). shes 9 weeks old. Also what do You reccomend as a remody?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Aller

Licking if the feet can indicate and infection or a bite or thorn that is painful there or the start of an allergy. You can try to soak the foot in warm water and feel to see if you find anything stuck in it. If not, you can apply medicated powder between the tissue to help with moisture control. If it continues or there is redness or swelling then you will need to a see vet for further testing and treatment

hey! so for the past few weeks fonzi has been licking and nibbling his paws. all 4 of them. i don’t think it’s food allergies because he’s been eating the same one for the past 4 months. i adopted him 6 months ago so this is our first summer together
nibbling the paws can be caused by various reasons such as fleas, mites ,fungal infection, bacterial infection and allergies. the first 4 needs to be ruled out before we start treating for allergies. in order to do that first de-flea him with a high quality flea treatment such as advantage spot on, if it doesn't help - take him to the vet in order to check for/treat the other possibilities. If everything is ruled out, then an allergy treatment can be started. Usually an hypoallergenic food is a good way to start together with anti histamines. if it doesn't help - the best solution is a medication called Apoquel which treats allergies with great success and without side effects.

Hello, I really need some help! My dog has always had very sensitive skin. At first we noticed lots of scratching so we took him to a vet. They prescribed temiral p which did help a litte, although we began to noticed him living and biting his paws.
Milo may need a medication like Apoquel or Cytopoint if he's suffering from allergies causing the licking and biting of his paws. I'd take him back into the vet to see if that is something that may help him.

Yes, you can speak to Lola's vet about medication. Typically this paw licking is a sign of allergies, and this can be treated with something like Apoquel or Cytopoint. Make an appointment with her vet.

Chewing at the paws is actually a sign of allergies in dogs. He could have an allergy to something in his food or something in the environment. Discuss with your veterinarian on treatment options for pets with alleriges. There are several medications that can be prescribed to help with this. If it is a mild allergy, then your vet may suggest antihistamines to try first. I would also recommend wiping Buddy's feet with baby wipes when he comes in from outside. This helps remove any possible allergens from his haircoat and can help reduce some of his symptoms if he has an environmental allergy. Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your question. This could be due to behavior, allergies, pain from arthritis or due to irritation. If you suspect she is dealing with an allergy, you can use a steroid spray on her feet such as Pramosoothe spray and apply this twice daily. You can find this spray online quite easily. If this does not help, then I would discuss arthritis treatment with a veterinarian and get a prescription for a pain medication to see if this helps with the behavior. If she continues to lick, this may be behavioral. In behavior cases, I typically recommend giving a new toy or a kong toy filled with peanut butter to distract the dog. You can also use products such as Adaptil collar and spray along with NaturVet Quiet Moments Calm Chews with Melatonin to help establish a calm environment / mindset. I hope this helps!
