My dog has a salivary cyst. What to do if vets are unavailable?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 2 years old | 10 lbs

If my dog has salivary cyst and as there are no vet open what can I do till the lockdown opens..is my pet is grave danger? He does not seem to have difficulty breathing yet just the pug things sometimes....he does have a lot of thick saliva when he eats ....I have never seen any blood in his mouth....he is eating and drinking water...his tongue hangs out a lot more but I thought that was because it's hot. He has also become very lazy

As long as Simba is eating and drinking, and the cyst isn't bleeding, he isn't in grave danger. He could be lazy due to the heat. I'd keep an eye on him and get him into the vet when you can. I hope this helps.

Hi thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. I would first try some antibiotics. But not all antibiotics are the same so I would maybe try your local pharmacist? We typically use pencillin-type drugs for salivary infections. Good luck, sorry about your pup!

I have miniature schnauzer, she had a small cyst on her side. The cyst became larger guickly, now the cyst looks like it is leaking small amounts if blood and pus. We have made an appointment at the vet for Monday. Can we wait or is this an emergency
Hi there! Looking at the picture, she should be fine to wait for the vet appointment until Monday. It may be something benign, such as a sebaceous cyst. If the vet is at all worried about how it looks, they will recommend a biopsy. If she is eating well and has an appropriate amount of energy, I would recommend leaving the spot alone for now and waiting for your appointment on Monday. I hope this helps! Hi there. If the cyst is bleeding right now, the only thing you can do at home is apply direct pressure to it with a paper towel or wash cloth until the bleeding stops. Then, I would recommend taking Mocha to the vet to have this checked when you are able to. He/she can advise you on whether the cyst should be surgically removed, or if any other treatment (antibiotics, etc.) is needed.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. This may not be a salivary gland issue and may be an infection or other cause. If you knew for sure 100% that this was a salivary gland issue, waiting until the morning would be ok. But because the cause is not known, I would recommend getting this looked at sooner. The sooner antibiotics are given for a possible infection , the better. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. I would also check blood work to make sure there are no systemic changes that are concerning. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

My sister dog has a small blood filled cyst on the inside of his hind leg. It does not bother him even when you touch it.
The problem with cysts is that they can get bigger, then pop, and refill again. This should be drained sterilely, and the cyst may need to be removed surgically to prevent it from reoccurring. Do not try to pop it yourself, as that will introduce infection into the area. I would have Jim seen by a vet today if the vet is open for normal business hours, or on Monday to have the cyst drained. The vet can decide if it needs to be removed surgically.

I have an emergency my dog has a ball in his neck and he's bleeding from the side he doesn't want to eat or play, he's 3 years old and I don't know what's wrong with him
Please get him assessed by your vet as soon as possible, this painful swelling may be from internal bleeding, an abscess and infection from the wound or a ruptured salivary gland. Your vet may wish to drain and test a sample of the fluid before starting medications. Keep him fasting for 12hrs before his appointment as sedation may be required

I think my dog developed a salivary cyst overnight. She does not seem to be in pain or unable to drink/eat/breath. Is it unwise to play ball with her in the park while the cyst is inflammed/swollen?
Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. It could be a salivary cyst but abscesses in this area are much more common. Please, take Martha to your local vets to confirm the diagnosis and to start treatment for her. If it is an abscess, Martha will need a course of antibiotics and possibly lancing of the abscess. If it is salivary gland cyst, your vet will likely recommend surgery as conservative treatment for salivary cysts does not provide satisfactory results.

It sounds like Fluffy could have a cyst. I would have him seen by a vet for this. If it is a cyst, it will need to be drained sterilely, and the vet may need to remove it surgically to prevent it from recurring. I would have him seen by a vet in the next few days for this.

It could be that Carlito had a cyst, and it burst from this inside causing it to become smaller. If he is eating and drinking normally, behaving normally, and using the toilet normally, then this can wait until Monday. If any of those things change, then I would have him seen by a vet right away.

You are correct that this lump on Simba could be a cyst, a benign tumor, or a malignant tumor. The only way to know for sure is to have him seen by a vet for it, and I'd recommend giving your vet a call on Monday to set up an appointment for him. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause the lump is found, the vet can discuss treatment options with you. Because it is uncomfortable for him when you touch, having him seen next week sometime is best. I hope this helps!
