Why is my 7-month puppy limping and struggling with his back legs?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

My male puppy of 7 months has been battling with his back legs while walking and struggles to get up. I've noticed the limping has been on and off for over a week. He is still playful and has shown no signs of aggression. He still has a healthy appetite.

Poor Louie! Limping means he is in pain, so he's been in pain for a week now. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain medications you can give him, as many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I'd have him seen by a vet for this today to get this limping diagnosed and treated. I hope this helps!

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Loui's care today! Leg pain can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Poor Charlie! It could be he strained or torn a ligament in his leg. A strained ligament can take a while to heal. But given the fact he's been limping for a week, it's time to take him into the vet. He may benefit from pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Do not give him any human pain medications, many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I would take him into vet today or tomorrow. I hope this helps!

Poor Lucy! Limping is a sign of pain in dogs, so it is hurting her if she's limping. Because she has had her leg lifted up only touching it to the ground sometimes and it's been a day of her doing this, I think taking her into the vet now would be a good idea. It's clearly hurting her, and she likely needs pain meds. Please do not give her any human pain medication, many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet can prescribe a safe pain medication for her, and can diagnose what is causing her to be non-weight bearing.

It could be that Loui has strained or torn a ligament, or it could be that he strained a muscle. There's also a possibility that he could have broken a bone. The only way to know for sure is to have him seen by a vet. I would call the vet in the morning to make an appointment for him. I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chico. If he is limping, this means that his leg is painful to him. Being a young dog, muscular injury from rough play is likely. He also could have a congenital problem where his kneecaps are loose and slip in and out of place. This can cause lameness as well. If he is eating and drinking and acting normal otherwise, you can give him strict rest for 24 hours. This means no running, jumping, stairs or playing. Carry him as much as possible. If the lameness does not resolve, then he will need to see his veterinarian. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Poor Cash! Possible causes of his limping include soft tissue injuries (dogs can be very stoic and hide these injuries!), fractures, elbow dysplasia, panosteitis or hypertrophic osteodystrophy. Since the limping has been getting worse, Cash should see his vet for an exam and possible x-rays of the affected leg. He will likely need pain medication that his vet can prescribe, but do not give any over the counter pain medications, as none are safe for dogs. Until you can take Cash to the vet, confine him to a crate or small room to prevent running, jumping and playing, as this could exacerbate any underlying injury. I hope that he's feeling better soon!
