My new puppy has parvo. Can my older dog or guinea pig get it?

My dog that is 3 months old is named Astrid and we got her 1 day ago. And she kept throwing up and we took her to the vet and sadly she has parvo. We are going to do treatment. But I was just wondering could the other dog that we had before for 10 years also could get parvo. Or even the guinnie pig we have ?

I'm so sorry Astrid has parvo! You did the right thing by taking her into the vet right away. If your other dog is fully vaccinated and current on her vaccines, she cannot get parvo. If she's not fully vaccinated or isn't up to date on her parvo vaccines, yes she can get it. The guinea pig cannot get it.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. If your other dogs are adults (over 2 years old) and current on their vaccinations, it is very unlikely that they would get parvo - this is almost always a disease of unvaccinated puppies. But, if you have other puppies or young dogs in the house, especially if they are not current on vaccines, then I would be concerned that they may catch it. The virus lives in the environment for years, so I would recommend cleaning everything that your puppy came into contact with using a diluted bleach solution.

Your older dog will only get parvo if 1.) he's not sufficiently vaccinated and 2.) he's exposed to parvo. The puppy needs 3 parvo/distemper combination vaccinations given 3 - 4 weeks apart, starting at least by 8 weeks of age. Your older dog should have had the same series as a puppy - I suggest you review the records given to you by the rescue when you adopted him. Sometimes, we will give an adult dog only 2 parvo/distemper vaccinations to consider them completely protected. So you need to determine your older dog's vaccination history before you can determine whether he (the older dog) would get parvo, if exposed to it. If your older dog is not vaccinated at all he needs to start getting vaccinated right away. The best person to do this is a veterinarian, who can ensure that he is healthy and able to mount an adequate immune response to the vaccination. Both dogs also need rabies shots, and in the US only a license veterinarian can do that.

Great question! Your oldest puppy cannot get diseases like parvo, but because parvo can live in the environment for months, it is possible she could bring it back. I'd avoid public places until the youngest is fully vaccinated.

It is possible that your dog could have caught parvo from your daughter's dog, especially if she wasn't fully vaccinated. Having her shots done less than a week ago will not have allowed enough time to occur to offer her protection, especially if it was her first vaccine. Given that she has been around a dog who has had parvo, I would take your dog into the vet immediately. Parvo is deadly, and she should be treated right away if she does have it for the best chance of survival. There is no cure for parvo, only symptomatic treatment. The vet can do a blood test to see if she does have parvo. Please take her into a vet immediately.

I'm so sorry you lost your puppy. Yes, some dogs seem to have relatively mild clinical signs with parvovirus and occasionally a dog will be essentially asymptomatic for the disease. Since at this point there no easy test to run to determine whether or JR had parvovirus I would recommend following instructions from your vet for cleaning the house and potentially restricting his access to areas where she was sick. If he is not up to date on vaccines it is very important that he is vaccinated.

The most important thing you can do to keep your dogs safe from parvovirus is to keep them up to date on the parvovirus vaccine. I would call your vet immediately and inquire about vaccinating the puppy, and watch for any signs of diarrhea. If your dogs are up to date on their vaccines, then their risk is very, very low. Again, watch for any signs of diarrhea or GI upset but I wouldn't worry too much about your dogs if they've been well vaccinated!

Parvo is spread through fecal-oral contamination. So unless your dog was in contact with the dog’s feces, she should be perfectly fine. Most vet offices are very strict in their cleaning protocols when it comes to parvo because it is so easily spread. I’m sure the clinic you were at cleaned the area thoroughly so there was no chance of contamination. I hope this helps, and that this gives you some peace of mind. Diarrhea is a common problem with puppies and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). The thread-like things are likely roundworms that were killed by the piperzine. Parvo is a possibility, if she has any of the following, then she should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can help him get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions (1/4 cup or less) three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pharmacy), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. Older dogs are usually resistant to parvo, but it's good to keep them separate while the pup is having the diarrhea. You also want to avoid them sharing any food/water dishes, or bedding. Can a new puppy bring Parvo into my house and infect my older dogs? I have two other dogs and seem to be lethargic since I brought her home.
If your other dogs are not fully vaccinated then yes they could be at risk. If the puppy is not showing signs of parvo, then he likely doesn't have it to give to the older dogs. Your other dogs could be just lethargic from the stress of having a new puppy in the house. If they are having vomiting, diarrhea, not eating or not drinking or if they don't start to perk up, I would have your vet take a look at them. I would also make sure to have every one up to date on their vaccines. I hope this helps!

If your five-year-old dog is up-to-date on all his vaccinations, it is very unlikely that he contracts parvo from your puppy. At this stage your puppy still needs to rest so should not engage in exhaustive play with your older dog, so watch them a little bit so you can slow them down if they get too wild.
