My dog's irritated rear: Home remedies not working, what's next?

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

Hi my dog, a 12 year old Bichon poodle has a very irritated rectal area. Always trying to bite at it. We tried warm washcloth cloths and cleansing it well with soap and water, neosporin, but it’s not helping. What would you recommend at this point? Would ibuprofen help?

No, do not give Wrigley ibuprofen, it is highly toxic to dogs! Complications can consist of internal bleeding and damage to liver and kidneys just to name a few. I would have him seen by a vet today have this diagnosed and treated.

Do not give him any over the counter human pain relievers, like Advil and Tylenol, as they are toxic to dogs. The best thing would be to have your vet take a look at him to determine the source of his discomfort. He could have a problem with his anal glands or possibly his tail or back. Your vet can do an examination and then prescribe medications to treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and/or pain medications.

My dog, a 15 lb dog has been very finicky lately. He paces around alot and starts crying at random.i haven't had money to take him to the vet.,so I have been giving him children's Motrin in small amounts.I think he may have some sort of back or body
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bimbo. Motrin is very toxic to dogs so you will need to stop giving him that medication. It can cause severe kidney damage or even ulcers in the stomach or intestines. Ulcers can be indicated by black tarry or coffee grounds like stool. I suspect you were right that he is painful based on your description of his behavior. Small breed dogs can be prone to back pain. The muscles that line the spine can spasm making the dog very sore. There not over-the-counter pain medications that I can recommend for him. I would keep him very quiet and carry him as much as possible. Encourage him to eat and drink as much as possible. If there is any way he could see a veterinarian, it would be best. I hope this information helps.

Oh no, that's not good! Ibuprofen is toxic to dogs, and the best thing for you to do is take Paxx into the vet immediately. The vet can start decontamination procedures to prevent ibuprofen toxicity from occurring. Please take Paxx into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now.

Hi, My dog he had allergic all over his face a few days ago.we took him to the vet but they have him only advil to cool down the swelling.It was all good until the swelling on his face getting worse aince he started to rub with his paws and legs.Now
Advil is not usually a medication given to pets as it can cause organ issues and severe stomach upset, however it is possible your vet tried to give a steroid or a pet-safe NSAID for the swelling. The area looks pretty awful and likely infected and should be seen by a veterinarian right away. i would be concerned at how fast it is changing and see if your vet wants to take a sample to send to a lab to rule out any other issues such as tumors/growths that could be causing it in addition to infection. Your vet may also recommend additional treatment or medications that can be given orally to prevent it from being rubbed/licked off. Keeping an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Scrapi is also a good idea to keep him from rubbing the spot.

My dog has had a lot of skin irritation and I am wondering what type of medication to give her to treat this . people have suggested paracetamol but I've heard that is bad for dogs
You should never give paracetamol to a dog, it is toxic and will not help skin irritation whatsoever. This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat her with a high quality flea treatment (e.g. advocate or advantage), then get her to the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). simultaneously you should start her on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 2 months. Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider putting her on a long term allergy treatment (Atopica or Apoquel).

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Zeus. Please do NOT give him ibuprofen, it is toxic to dogs and have a very narrow safety margin. You could accidentally cause great harm to him if you give it to him. It sounds like to me he is in a lot of pain if he hasn't moved off the couch, won't eat or drink, and moves very slowly when you do get him down. Because there aren't any safe OTC pain medications you can give, I would take him into a vet now. The vet can prescribe pain medication for him that's safe, and can examine him to see what could be causing the pain. Have him seen by a vet immediately. I hope this helps, best of luck!

No, it is not safe to give Buffy Motrin, so please do not give it to her. Many human OTC pain medications are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The only safe pain medications for dogs are available at the vet. I would have her seen by a vet first thing Monday to get pain medication prescribed. In the meantime, rest her as much as possible. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to potty on a lead only and bring her right back in when she's done. I hope this helps!

Please do not give ibuprofen. It can be toxic to dogs and with your cute girl being small I am very concerned about an overdose. It is an emergency, please try and take Simon to your nearest open vet or local emergency service to get him seen. There are no over the counter medications that would be safe to administer at home, I am afraid.

My 2 yr old English bulldog we think ate 1200mg of ibuprofen yesterday seems completely fine should I be worried
Hi there. We can see serious GI side effects, including stomach ulcers and internal bleeding, at ibuprofen doses over 50 mg/kg. If Dubs is 35 pounds and may have ingested 1200 mg of ibuprofen, this would be about 75 mg/kg - so yes, he would be at risk of developing some serious problems. I would recommend taking him to the vet today for an exam. The veterinarian may recommend checking some lab work to see if there is any evidence of bleeding in his stomach, and will probably prescribe medication to help protect his stomach lining for the next few days until the ibuprofen is out of his system.
