My 13-year-old chihuahua is wheezing and gagging. Is it serious?

My 13 year old chihuahua started a wheezing/gagging five days ago. It’s worse when he eats and when he tries to play with his ball, but continues all day unless he’s relaxed and/or sleeping. He hasn’t been around any other dogs for months. Should I be worried or wait a while longer to see if he gets better?

I'd be worried because this can be a sign of something serious like heart disease. I'd have Skippu seen by a vet today for a physical exam, geriatric blood work, a urinalysis, and possibly chest x-rays. Based on the results of those tests, the vet can make a diagnosis and discuss what treatment options are available. I hope this helps!

    Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. My biggest concerns for Peanut would be either heart disease, collapsing trachea, or an infectious bronchotracheitis could be present. I recommend you have a visit to the vet. If heart disease is present this might be an early warning sign (one we often don't get), and if ignored Peanut could get very very sick quickly. Hopefully it is nothing, but any cough in a small breed dog that is a bit older should NOT be ignored. Best of luck with Peanut!

I'd have Ginger checked out by a vet for this problem. It could be she has a respiratory infection or she could have heart disease causing this wheezing. It could also be she is suffering from a condition called a collapsing trachea. This needs to be checked out by a vet so she can be treated as needed. Best of luck.

If the age you put in, 20, is really correct I would say that you should have her evaluated for cardiorespiratory disease. Mitral valve disease in small dogs is extremely common particularly at an older age. Coughing is often the first sign of heart disease that we see. Another structural issue that occurs in smaller breed dogs is called a collapsing trachea. A chest x-ray should be considered strongly regardless of the veterinarian's physical exam findings. The consumption of grass is often associated with GI upset or nutritional deficiencies. Depending on what the condition is, medications that might be considered are bronchodilators, antibiotics, steroids, and diuretics. More information will be required however before commencing any therapy. Hope this helps.

Hi, wheezing can be secondary to several conditions such as infection, asthma etc. I would recommend to have her checked over to understand what is causing it and how to help her feel better. Hope this helps !

Hello! I need help please. My 6 year old chihuahua has been gagging constantly for the past hour and we do not know what to do.
It sounds as Baby is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti nausea injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

Hello! I think my little chihuahua has a cold/ she breaths like shes stuffed (sound stuffy when she breaths) should i take her in to see the vet?
I'm sorry Shanelle isn't doing well! Yes, I would take her into to see the vet. At her age, while it could be she has a respiratory infection, it's also possible that she is suffering from heart disease causing the sounds when she breathes. It's best she has a physical exam, geriatric blood tests, urinalysis, and chest x-rays to see what is causing her symptoms so she can be treated. If she did have heart disease, it cannot be cured but the symptoms can be managed with medication. I would have her seen by a vet on Monday or Tuesday. I hope this helps!

I would be concerned at almost 12 years old he may have a heart condition. I would recommend bringing him to your veterinarian to have them listen to him. I would be extremely concerned about her having a cardiac issue. Please take her to your vet so they can check to see if she has a heart murmur as that can lead to heart failure. Coughing is one of the first symptoms. She is the right age and breed for this to be happening. The other likely cause would be a collapsing trachea. I recommend that you have Jayme evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. I eould take Smokie to the vet to have this checked out. It may be absoloutely nothing but I thonk it would be best to have a vet carefully check him in case he has infection or inflammation in his throat or chest. Also the vet can have a look in his mouth to make sure there are no growths or causes of discomfort.
