My new dog has pyoderma. What are safe topical creams and antibiotics?

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 60 lbs

Hi there, I recently adopted a 2 year old boxer mix, and the shelter told us that he has mild pyoderma that we should take care of soon. Are there topical creams that you recommend, and should they be taken with an antibiotic? If so, which antibiotics do you recommend? Many thanks.

I cannot legally recommend any medications without seeing Otis in person. If he has pyoderma, you need to have him seen by a vet to get medication prescribed. I'd take him into a vet today. Best of luck.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Bruno. I'm sorry he has been having problems with his skin again. Unfortunately we cannot give a prescription for these medications, it's illegal for us to do so without seeing him in person. You will need a prescription to get these medications, and in order to get that, you will have to take him into the vet. I'd make an appointment for him to be seen in the next couple of days. How do I treat pyoderma on my dog dose he need Meds or just bathing 3 times a week
Pyoderma usually needs antibiotic oral treatment if it is located in more than one place, if it is in one specific place an antibiotic ointment might be enough. bathing can also help but only with a special medicated shampoo.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Thanks for the pictures. It appears as though Sparky may have a bacterial skin infection, or puppy pyoderma. A lot of times puppy pyoderma resolves on it's own. If it gets worse than this I would recommend taking Sparky to the Vet to be evaluated and prescribed oral antibiotics. Is there any over the counter medicine I can buy until I can get my dog to the vets
Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. Judging from the pictures you have provided, this area on the skin looks as though it could be from a bacterial skin infection. There are several products you can use but the one I would recommend that you can pick up at stores like PetCo would be Sentry Anti-Bacterial Wound Cream for Dogs. I would apply this until you are able to get to the veterinarian as Woofy may also need a course of an oral antibiotic. I would also recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS Chlorhexidine combination and Malacetic conditioning spray, which can be found online quite easily. The shampoo should be used twice weekly and the spray applied twice daily until the problem resolves. I hope this helps! Can I give my dog amoxicillin for his pyoderma?
Yes, but I prefer cephalexin or cefpodoxime for skin infection. The amoxicillin dose for a dog 40lbs would be about 200mg every 12 hours. I would recommend seeing a vet though for appropriate antibiotic therapy recommendations. Topical therapy should also be considered. I typically recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until the infection is resolved. I also recommend using welactin omega 3 fish oil and essential 6 spot on by dermoscent. Malacetic conditioning spray is also a good option to spray isolated areas on the body where infection is present. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. our dog has been treated for Pyoderma since he was a puppy. He is now 9 months old. So he has been on Cefpodoxime since then. He still has Pyoderma. Is there a better way to be treating our puppy?
I am sorry to hear about your puppy! This pyoderma likely has some underlying cause, such as allergies or parasites, which needs to be investigated. If it is not improving with the current antibiotic he may also need a skin culture to see if this is an appropriate antibiotic. I would talk to your vet about additional testing (such as skin scrapes, skin cytology, allergy testing) and other medications (such as Cytopoint, Apoquel, or special diet) that may be tried, or for a referral to a dermatologist.

Tyson needs to see a veterinarian. This is going to need antibiotics and potentially a shampoo. If he is licking I would recommend an Elizabethan collar until you can see a veterinarian. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

hi, gud day..my gs 4month old have impetigo i guess. can i give him co amoxiclav? what dosage? he is 19kgs. thank you
If there are some red bumps on his belly with white spots in the middle, then it could be impetigo (aka puppy pyoderma). It's best to get this diagnosed by a veterinarian, because other conditions like mange can be quite similar looking. I do not reccomend giving oral antibiotics without a veterinary evaluation first and it's usually not indicated with impetigo. Most impetigo cases will clear up with good cleaning, so I reccomend that you get a medicated shampoo from the pet store and wash the area for 15 minutes once a day. This should start to clear up in a week. If it gets worse or doesn't start to clear up after a week, then it should definitely be seen by a vet, or it could get much worse without veterinary treatment. My dog has sores and I think he needs antibiotics
I see the sores, and I would agree that antibiotics are likely needed. Since we can't prescribe medications through the platform, I would recommend that you have Huero examined by a vet to determine the cause for the sores (external parasites, autoimmune disease, endocrine disease, allergies, etc) and the best possible treatment.
