My dog's broken nail is still attached and he's limping. What to do?

Poor Scooby. He's hobbling because he is in pain and this nail will need to be removed. This will be quite painful to him, so he will have to be sedated to have it done, which can only be done by a vet. Take him into the vet first thing in the morning to get this done. Do not feed him in the morning so he can safely be sedated.

Poor Ruby. These can be really painful to dogs. This will have to be cut off, but I would not do it yourself because of the pain. Wrap a bandage around her paw to protect and cover it, then have her seen by a vet in the morning to have it treated. Cover the whole paw with the bandage. She may need to be sedated to have it removed, so don't feed her in the morning. I hope this helps!

My dog has caught his claw on something and it has split and bent. He licks it occasionally, is walking fine but worries if he thinks we are going to touch it. He doesn't appear to be in pain but was limping earlier this morning. Any advice please?
Ouch! That looks pretty split and should be trimmed back, especially if he is licking at it or limping as that can indicate pain. I would bring him to your vet so that he can be sedated and given some pain meds to make trimming any painful parts of the nail easier on him. Your vet can also provide you with longer-term pain meds and an antibiotic as needed to help it heal.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Devon. Poor boy! Limping means he is in pain, and the fact that he bites you when you try to touch it means he's really hurt. I would take him into a vet now. The vet can sedate him, and can remove the rest of the nail safely. He will also need pain medications and antibiotics, which the vet can prescribe. I recommend taking him into a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

My dog caught his nail on something and now it’s split. Been putting hydrogen peroxide on it. Any suggestions on how to move forward?
That's a bad split. That will need to be removed, but do not do it at home. That will have to be done with the vet under sedation as it will be very painful. Get Baxter into a vet this weekend if he's limping or it appears infected. Otherwise, you can wait until Monday to have him seen. Wrap it in a bandage to keep it protected until he sees the vet, and do not allow him to lick the area. Do not put any more hydrogen peroxide on it. I hope this helps.

sudden trauma to nail caught when out walking. bleeding stopped quickly. still limping three days later. nothing to see. shall we keep bathing and give pain relief? thanks
Please don't give any over-the-counter pain medications; they can be toxic to dogs at even low doses and giving them will confound your vet's ability to treat the pain with appropriate medications. The reality is that most of these nail injuries end up getting infected, and even if there's no infection they are exquisitely painful. You can compare it to losing your fingernail completely, but then having to walk on the uncovered cuticle. Patch likely needs to have the area numbed and the remaining nail pulled, then have a very soft/cushioning bandage placed, followed by antibiotics and pain medication. Please take him in to see his vet as soon as you can for this.

My dog was outside and came back in with a very broken nail. It looks too high up to cut, but is not bleeding currently. What should I do for this poor guy?
If it's not bleeding it may not have injured the quick but I can't tell from the photo. The broken part of the nail needs to be removed and of the break is behind the quick, Loki needs to be sedated and clip behind the break (which is painful so they get sedated). Since you are unable to tell how severe the break is, I recommend to have Loki examined first thing tomorrow morning. Restrict the activity today and do not allow him to climb up and down on the couch. He should only be outside on a leash. Ouch, poor Zoey! I would not try to remove it yourself, as it is likely painful to her and she may bite you due to the pain. I would try to cover it tonight, and put an Ecollar on her to prevent her from licking at it. Take her into the vet in the morning to have the nail removed. Poor Kratos. This will be painful for him. I think the best thing to do is take him into a vet now to get this nail treated. It will need to be removed, and he may need to be sedated to get it done. I hope this helps!

Poor O! He may have broken a toe or just the nail. Even breaking the nail can be quite painful. Leave it be tonight, and take him into a vet first thing in the morning. Rest him tonight. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to potty on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. In the morning, the vet can treat it as well as giving him antibiotics and safe pain medication. I hope this helps.

what do I do with my dogs nail that he broke and the quick is exposed?
That one will likely need to be clipped past the split to alleviate the pressure and pain. Because doing that can be painful and typically requires a bandage for the bleeding, your vet needs to do it so they can use sedation to control the pain! If it is not bleeding you can wait until the morning for your vet to open
