My dog has bloody diarrhea, mucus, and is lethargic. What should I do?

First time this happened. Utd on shots. Diarrhea with mucus and white specs and blood. 2 year old catahoula leopard female dog. I’m very worried about her. Anything I can do until I can get her to the vet Monday. On heartworm medicine sentinel spectrum. She ate rice and drank water after this bowel movement. Seems lethargic

Poor Ember. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

Blood can be found in stool from inflammation in the colon that can happen with episodes of diarrhea. There are several possible causes of diarrhea including food intolerance, parasites, viral or bacterial infection, and stress. If diarrhea continues, I recommend taking a sample of the stool to your veterinarian to have them check for parasites. For the next day or two, you can try feeding white rice and boiled chicken to see if this helps to resolve the diarrhea. A probiotic or yogurt can add some healthy bacteria back to the system. If the diarrhea becomes severe or you are seeing a lot more blood, then emergency treatment may be necessary. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

My dog is having diarrhea and farting occasionally. Regardless of that she ate her dinner but she isn’t really interested in food much as she was before. She seems really down and less energetic. Do you know what this possibly can be?

Heat and temperature changes can certainly cause some lethargic and GI upset. If it's only happened once, a bland meal of boiled chicken and rice may help, however if you continue to see blood in the stool, Zola's abdomen becomes very tender, or she has an increase in symptoms such as extreme lethargy when the temperature cools, vomiting, or more diarrhea, seeking vet care to rule out issues such as pancreatitis and other GI illness are best.

My dog has been vomiting for about 3 days, diarrhea, and is lethargic. I don't know what's wrong with her and I can't afford to take her to a vet.
This is a tough situation because she is likely suffering from some degree of dehydration on top of any underlying condition. Try withholding food for 12-24 hours. Allow or syringe feed small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet ( boiled boneless / skinless chicken and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Serve warm or mix in a teaspoon or two of baby food to stimulate the appetite. If the vomiting stops, continue feeding until the stool is normal then transition slowly to the regular diet. If the vomiting or diarrhea don't stop, you will need to see a veterinarian. Contact your local animal shelter and ask about low cost clinics. Consider a financing option such as CareCredit.

I'm sorry Sammy doesn't feel well! Don't worry about her nose being dry, that's not a sign of illness in dogs. A dog's nose can go from wet to dry simply by lying in the sun or next to a heat source. It sounds like she has some diarrhea, so I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps.
