My dog had severe symptoms & was alert. Was putting her down too soon?

We put down my dog yesterday. we are all devastated because we think we did it to early, but she was constantly dry heaving, pooping uncontrollably and sucking her entire stomach to breath in. But she was still calm and kind of alert, did we do the wrong thing? Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 100 lbs
