My Shih Tzu with UTI won't eat, drink, or pee. Is it an emergency?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | 15.4 lbs

My shih tzu 5yrs old dog, refuses to eat, drink and also he is not urinating or pooping. He is diagnozed with UTI and currently taking Cotrimoxazole. After almost 2 days he is still not peeing or pooping. What should I do? Not vet is available right now due to the situation.

Sa sounds very sick, and unfortunately this cannot be treated at home if he's not eating and drinking, and has not peed or pooped in two days. Vets should be available for emergencies, and this counts as an emergency. Please call around to local vets to find someone to see him now.

Oh no. Poor guy may have a urinary obstruction caused by stones. If he is straining to urinate it is imperative that you get him seen by a vet immediately! This can be life threatening if he retains urine for longer than 12-24 hrs as toxins will build up in his body, so please take him in for medical care.

IF she is painful and restless and straining to go, then I would. If she is resting and able to urinate then it is not a true emergency but may be uncomfortable for her. As long as she is urinating, then you can try to wait for your regular vet and monitor her for any changes

If she's completely refusing food and water and it's been more than a day, I would try to get her into your vet sooner or into the ER. You can check to see how dehydrated Aurora is by gently pinching and tenting the skin over her neck. If it seems "sticky" or is very slow to return back to normal, this is a sign of dehydration. If she's dehydrated in addition to her other symptoms and also is suffering from underlying health issues, I would have her seen right away.

Poor Takumi. If you tried offering him chicken and he won't eat, that tells me he is quite sick and cannot be treated at home. He needs to see a vet immediately to get this diagnosed and treated. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.

She can have a few different things going on. She can have a urinary tract infection or she may have an upset stomach from eating human food. I recommend calling your veterinarian in the morning and having a physical examination performed to see what is going on. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

She may indeed have a UTI, but also a slipped disc in her spine could make urination painful, or bladder stones. Since not being able to urinate can be a life threatening condition and cause kidney damage, it is very important that you take Leeloo to your veterinarian ASAP, ie this is an emergency. Please call your vet now.

Hi, it does sound like Chibi is having troubles passing urine. In terms of what you need to do, he needs to be seen by a vet his condition is classed as an emergency. The fact he can't urinate properly but just droplets and that he has retched and refused to eat, can indicate that the inability of pass urine is causing all the waste products to be reabsorbed in his blood. As time goes by he will progressively get worse, so I recommend you try to get hold of your vet explaining you think it is an emergency and 24 hours is too long to wait. Apart from offering water, he needs to have some treatment for urethral obstruction, there is nothing you can do at home apart from keeping him indoors, try to avoid unnecessary stress, make sure he is in a cool room.. and most importantly try to find a vet. Hope all goes well, please let us now if there is anything else that we can do. If you have any antinflammatories, stop them for the time being as we think he might not be able to urinate and can

Poor Dooley - this sounds serious! Blood in the urine can be a sign of an infection or bladder stones, but can also be seen with bleeding disorders. I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible since he is unable to unwilling to walk - that is usually a sign of serious illness.

It sounds as Momori is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.
