My senior dog has a stomach bump she's licking. Is it serious?

My dog is 8 years old. I’ve noticed this bump/sore on her upper stomach area for about a week now, she is licking it and gets defensive when I try to look at it. Should I have this checked out and what could it be? Thank you.

This could be a growth and in a dog Blondie's age, there is a chance it could be malignant. It does appear to be bothering her if she gets defensive when you try to look at it and is licking it. I'd have her seen by a vet for it this week. I hope this helps!

Hi Mackenzie. In a dog Sadie's age, a lump can be pretty serious. There's a chance it could be malignant. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. Give her vet a call to make her an appointment.

This growth on your dog could be a benign tumor or a malignant tumor. Any suspicious growth should be examined by a vet. The vet can do a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the growth to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's typically painless to the dog and relatively quick and easy to perform. I would have your dog seen by a vet on Monday to have the growth examined and diagnoses so it can be treated.

My dog has this spot on her mid stomach area. She has been licking it excessively.
That could be a growth, like a benign growth, and it's clearly bothering Leinie if she keeps licking at it. Put an Ecollar on her to stop licking at it. You can buy one at a pet store or make one at home. Then have her seen by a vet on Monday for this. The vet can diagnose what it is, and can treat as needed. Best of luck.

This bump on Abby could be a cyst, a benign tumor, or potentially a malignant tumor, which is always a possibility in a senior dog. Any suspicious bumps should be examined by the vet. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. I would have Abby seen by a vet tomorrow to get the lump examined and diagnosed so it can be treated if needed. It may need to be removed surgically depending on the diagnosis, but the vet can make that determination.

We cannot diagnose anything from a picture, it's impossible. I understand wanting to avoid a vet bill, but from this picture, it does not appear to be a traditionally lipoma. You have to have Angel seen by a vet for this, this growth does not look good. If she is licking at it, yes it's bothering her. What's best for her is to take her into a vet, and I would take her into one today or tomorrow.

I have an 8 year old cairn terrier and I have found 2 lumps on the side of his stomach, they are no bigger than a small thumb nail but he seems to be nibbling at one. Is this something to be concerned about? Thanks
Hello there from across the pond! Lumps and bumps on older dogs are fairly typical and are to be expected with an older pet. By and large, lumps and bumps that are round, smooth, and/or freely movable generally speaking are not causes for alarm. However, lumps and bumps that become red, inflamed, warm to the touch, itchy, have rough edges, are rapidly growing, or have discharge coming from them need to be looked at by a veterinarian and have them assessed. Regardless, I would recommend your veterinarian take a look at Chester and take small sample of the small mass he has and look at it under a microscope. From there, your vet can determine the nature of the mass and if it is concerning. You may also discuss surgical removal of the small mass if that is recommended by your vet. I hope this has helped!

My dog has a lump on her stomach.
This lump/growth should be ideally examined by your veterinarian to have a definitive diagnosis. Your vet will examine it and possibly perform with an FNA (fine needle aspiration) or a biopsy. Differentials would include skin cyst, infections or benign or malignant type of tumors. Hi, we found a bump on my 9 year old bichon dogs leg. He keeps licking it. We don't know if it's a wart, or something more serious. I do have a couple pictures but don't know how to send them.
Bumps on legs that are causing the dog to lick them, are most often tumors which need to be examined. I suggest you take Buehrle to your vet for an exam. The vet will like to do a FNA (Fine Needle Aspirate) and look at the cell material from the tumor, or he may decide that the tumor may need to be surgically removed , foregoing an FNA or biopsy.

There is not a photo attached to the post and that may help to give better advice. There are many reasons why Sassy may be licking her stomach and it includes allergies to fleas, allergies to something in the environment, food allergy or endocrine disease. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently and I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian which one to start hunting down first. Parasites are often ruled out with an oral medication like Simparica. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the licking should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause.
