My diabetic dog's paw is swollen, red, and has a bump. Is it serious?

Hi my dog has a swollen, red paw with a bump on top and I’m not sure what it is. He is diabetic as well.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Chewy. Poor boy, that is quite a bump. That looks pretty red and irritated, and I see he's missing fur around it, which tells me he's been licking the area a lot. It's clearly bothering him. This could be a cyst, an abscess, or it could potentially be a growth that is either benign or malignant. I don't like the appearance of it, and think it's best you take him into a vet today to get this diagnosed. Once it's diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options. I hope this helps!

Thank you for using Boop by Petco! It is definitely concerning that the lump has increased in size so quickly, as older dogs are typically more likely to develop cancers. The lump can also be an infection or cyst. I recommend having this seen by a vet as soon as possible - they can take a small sample from the growth to determine exactly what it is and recommend the appropriate treatment. I hope all is well!

Hi, can I know what happen to my dog hand as I found that there is a lump on his hand. When I try to touch, he keep his paw away and he keep licking it. I feel like there is some pus inside and it swelling. Please help.
The bump you are seeing could be a mass, or it could be a skin lesion caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, or could be a combination of the above. I recommend making an appointment to have your dog seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the bump you’ve noticed and to make sure it is treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine what is causing the bump and to provide treatment. . In the meantime, if he is licking the area, I recommend putting an e-collar/cone on him to help prevent licking and reduce the risk of infection.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Based on its appearance I am concerned that this could be a growth. This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to see that Max is having a problem with his paw. One general rule I use for any problems is this, if the problem persists or worsens/spreads I always advise a check up with your veterinarian. This area could be one of many things including an infection, an insect bite/sting, flea/tick bite, trauma, a solid growth or tumor (benign or malignant), a cyst, etc. If the area is bothering him, he may be irritating it more by rubbing it or licking it. Your vet can take a thorough history and perform a complete exam, closely checking out the affected area of the paw. Once that is performed they can advise a diagnostic approach which may include cytology, blood tests, skin tests, etc or they may advise an appropriate course of treatment based on what they conclude it could be. Max may need antibiotics, anti inflammatory drugs, topical medicines, and an e collar to prevent Max from licking the area. Good luck with Max.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This lump could be something like an abscess for example. I think that is more likely than being a growth given her age though a growth cannot be completely ruled out. However, other things are possible. I recommend that you have Luna evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If an abscess was noted, further local therapy with drainage and antibiotics would be recommended. Good luck and best wishes!

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco! Any lumps/bumps that you notice on your dog should be checked out by your vet. Lumps can be any of these things: * abscess (infection) * cyst * cancer (benign or malignant) * wart Unfortunately, there is no way I can tell you what it is with 100% certainty just based on your description or by looking at a photo but if I had to guess, I would say it is a benign histiocytoma. If it is a histiocytoma, it should go away on it's own within a few weeks to a month or so. my 10 year old boxer has a large red lump on the top of his right back paw. It is between the toes back away from his nails. You can touch it and he does not show signs of pain but it looks like it would hurt. What could it be?

My dog has a bump on his paw.... not in between his “toes”? But on his paw by his nail. It is white, red and swollen. He has been licking it for a few days now and it looks like it is causing discomfort. Is this a cyst?
Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. This could be from a penetrating injury such as a thorn and Griffin may have made it worse by licking or chewing at it. I would get a plastic cone and put it around his head and soak his paw in a solution of Epsom salt and water for the next 3 days. If there is no improvement or the area worsens, I would get him seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
