My dog is limping and in pain. What can I do before seeing a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 105 lbs

My dog has been limping lately and all vets are closed due to the coronavirus, she seems like she’s in some pain as when she tries to go upstairs, she starts panting until eventually falling asleep, What should I do to support her?

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Unfortunately there is not a lot that can be done without seeing your veterinarian. Della will need a complete exam to help localize the pain and where the limping in coming from. She'll also need a few x-rays to help determine the cause of the limping. Blood work may also be needed to help determine if it is something infectious as a cause. Until you can see your veterinarian I would recommend keeping her calm and avoid unnecessary activity such as running, jumping, stairs, etc. You can take her for short leashed walks but other activities should be avoided.
