My dog limps sometimes but is still active. Is her weight the cause?

Hi! I wanted to ask you about my dog limping sometimes. Its a stafford shire bull terrier (1 year 6 months old) its been a few months she sometimes limps when walking. She will run and play as much as she can.. most of the time is ok,but still sometimes limps.. my vet told me it can be due to 2-3kg overweight. From what i read online,i see no limping in dogs for that reason. Could you give any opinions on this? Thanks in advance :)

Limping means Shila is in pain. Because she is a bit overweight, that adds extra pressure to her joints, which in turn can cause the limping. I suspect that is why your vet said it was due to the extra kgs. I would work on her losing some weight to see if that helps.

Being overweight will not help Aarfaa, as it puts extra strain on her joints. She could have a problem with her hips or with her cruciate ligaments causing the limping. Because this has been going on for a few months, she needs to see a vet. I would take her into one first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing her pain, and can treat her. Since Kilba can't talk, only a physical exam will be able to determine the source of the lameness. Just like people, the pain/limping can be related to many causes including a ligament tears, soft tissue injury, a developmental abnormality or even a spinal issue. You may try strict rest for a few days (no walks, running, jumping or stairs). If Kilba does not improve, have her examined by the veterinarian. She may need radiographs and the doctor will determine this based on the exam. I hope she starts feeling better quickly.

I have a 9 yo chiuahua mix, and everytime we come back for a walk he seems to have a limp on his front leg, same leg, everytime. He doesnt cry out in pain, just a limp. Hes a tad overweight, would this be the issue? And can I keep walking him?
It could be that Buddy is suffering from arthritis, and that's causing him to limp in pain. Arthritis is common in older dogs. I would take Buddy into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose if he is suffering from arthritis, and can give him some pain meds for it. Rimadyl (an NSAID) is a good drug to give to help with the symptoms of arthritis. I also recommend giving him glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate supplements. They provide the necessary nutrients for cartilage repair and function. Use of them helps relieve some of the symptoms of arthritis, and you can use it in conjuction with Rimadyl to help maximize relief from his symptoms.

I am very sorry to hear that Amica is limping, I am sure it is worrying for you both. Unfortunately, there are many reasons why a dog may limp, ranging from injury, infection, osteoarthritis, disorders of the growing bones or joints, and even some cancers. Dogs can also be very good at hiding the exact location of the problem. In order to determine the precise cause of Amica's limping it would be best to take her in for an examination by a veterinarian. A veterinarian will also be able to make Amica comfortable by providing pain relief medication. The vet may also perform an orthopaedic exam and an X-ray. If Amica seems very uncomfortable or depressed, you suspect a broken bone, the limb is dangling at an unnatural angle, a limb is being dragged, severe swelling is occurring, the limb is hot, bone is piercing the skin, or nonstop bleeding is occurring, Amica needs to see a veterinarian immediately. Hi Loyd. Limping means Sheba is in pain, and I suspect she was moving slower earlier because she was also in pain. I'd have her seen by a vet today to get pain medication. Please do not give her any human pain medication, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

I recommend keeping her activity restricted, try to limit her running and jumping. If she is still limping after a couple days rest then I would recommend a vet visit to see if she needs any pain medications. Do not give human pain medications as they can be toxic to dogs

Her reduced activity level may be due to the lameness or arthritis pain. I recommend a veterinary exam for the lameness. They will feel her neck shoulder and the rest of the leg to determine the cause. They may also do X-rays to look for bone and joint problems. If they think Ruby is painful they can prescribe pain medication. 4y/o dog developed limp right back leg today. She sleeps, runs, even jumps on bed. She plays eats seems not to be in pain. How long should I wait befor bringing to vet. She is active.
If it just started you can let her rest for a few days with minimal walking and minimal physical exercise, if it does not improve within 3-4 days you will have to take her to the vet in order to get it checked and treated, she might need pain killers for a few days. if the vet think it's something more serious such as a fracture, joint injury or foreign body, he might recommend to have an xray done as well.

I have a 10 year old mixed terrier she's been limping on her back legs. I went to rub her hips and there are to hard lump on each side of hips. I know she's over weight and old.
Mija is limping because she is in pain. Unfortunately there are no human pain relievers you can give her, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. These bumps may be a part of her normal anatomy. I would have her seen by a vet.

3 days before, my lab weighing 45kgs started limping lightly. I took her to the local vet. They saw and said that there is nothing major, lets give painkiller for 3 days and still if problem persists, we will go for x-ray. What is possibly the reason
It could be that Jenny has a ligament strain, a muscle strain, or she could have torn a ligament. It sounds like your vet is trying a conservative treatment first to see if that helps before doing additional testing, which is a normal way of approaching a limping dog. I would follow the vet's instructions and see if she improves or not. I hope this helps!
