Why is my dog limping with a swollen toe after his nail fell out?

Nail fell out last week. He’s been fine up until tonight now he’s limping and the toe looks swollen

Poor Rocky. The swelling can indicate infection and limping means he is in pain. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain relievers you can give him, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. You should take him into a vet now to have him treated. I hope this helps!

It sounds like it is infected. You could soak his paw in a warm Epsom salt solution and see if that helps. He should also be examined by a vet as he will probably need an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory to help treat the problem.

Poor Spike Lee (love his name!). No, unfortunately you can't treat this yourself, an infection requires oral antibiotics to treat and only a vet can prescribe them for him. I would take him into the vet tomorrow to have his nail treated. Tonight, you can try soaking his foot in an Epsom salt bath to give him some temporary relief. I hope this helps!

Please don't give any over-the-counter pain medications; they can be toxic to dogs at even low doses and giving them will confound your vet's ability to treat the pain with appropriate medications. The reality is that most of these nail injuries end up getting infected, and even if there's no infection they are exquisitely painful. You can compare it to losing your fingernail completely, but then having to walk on the uncovered cuticle. Patch likely needs to have the area numbed and the remaining nail pulled, then have a very soft/cushioning bandage placed, followed by antibiotics and pain medication. Please take him in to see his vet as soon as you can for this.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Harley. Yes, I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. I worry that an infection has spread to her digit if the toe is now swollen. The veterinarian will examine her and may recommend removing the entire nail under anesthesia. In this case, the paw is bandaged until the nail can start to grow back out. If this is not, then the toe will likely be shaved and cleaned. A bandage may still be applied. Regardless, oral antibiotics, pain medication and an E-collar will likely be warranted. In the meantime, do not allow her to lick the toe. You can use an E-collar now if you have one. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

My dog has been acting differently. He not as happy. He isn’t eating like he used to nor drinking water. He sitting differently. He limping with his back leg. He doesn’t sit on his butt it more on his back.
Limping means Rocky is in pain, and if he's not eating as normal and not drinking, that tells me he is in a lot of pain. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain medications you can give him. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I'd take him into a vet now to get treated.

Unfortunately, you cannot treat this at home. The redness and swelling indicates an infection, which can only be treated by a vet. In addition, this will be painful to Kip, and there are no OTC pain medications you can give him. Many human ones are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Hank. I am concerned that his toe is not healing. Infections in the nail and digit can be hard to treat. Sometimes aggressive antibiotics are needed. I will usually prescribe two separate antibiotics for a broader spectrum of coverage. However, I am always suspicious of cancer when there is a non-healing on a toe. In this case, you may discuss amputation with his veterinarian. I hope this information helps!

My dog and I where playing fetch about three days ago. And he came back limping. I looked him over and it’s just one toe on his left paw. There is swelling and a bit of discomfort.
It's possible that Bandit has injured a tendon, ligament, or bone in the toe to cause swelling and a limp. These injuries are best treated with antiinflamatories and stabilisation/bandaging, so it's best to take him to the vet for a diagnosis and treatment. It's not an emergency though, so this can wait until normal business hours. These injuries tend to heal well over a couple of months if not reinjured. For now, it's best to restrict Bandit's activity and ice the area for 15 minutes twice a day. I hope that helps and Bandit gets better soon.

My pup has been limping off and on again but for the most part acting completely normal.he looks to have broken one of his nails and is paw is red(probably from him licking it)should I be concern or will it clear up with time?
You are correct in that it looks like Ollie has damaged a toe nail. This can be quite painful to dog and would explain the limping. Be sure to keep him from licking the nail. If he does, it is easy for an infection to occur. As long as the lameness is resolving and the toe does not become swollen, he should heal up fine. If either of those things occur though, he will need to see his veterinarian. I hope this helps and Ollie is back to normal soon!

Pipi could have a soft tissue injury, a dislocated bone or even a broken bone. I recommend having your veterinarian do an exam and maybe an X-ray to diagnose her. She may need rest, dog anti inflammatory medication or even a splint. I would not splint it yourself as that could accidentally affect her growth plates and cause long term issues. Do not give any human medication as it can be toxic to dogs.
