Why is my chihuahua's ear painful, floppy, and he scratches it?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 5 lbs

I have a 2 1/2 year old chihuahua. The past couple days I have noticed something wrong with his right ear. He seems to gently scratch it and if we touch it seems to hurt because he cries. Also we noticed the ear flops down lower then the other. I ordered ear drops for him and we have been putting warm compress on him. But it has not seem to get much better.

I suspect Coffee has an ear infection, which could be caused by yeast or bacteria. Leaving this untreated can lead to hearing loss, so it's very important you take him into the vet in the morning. The vet can diagnose if he does have an ear infection, what is causing it, and can treat him. I hope this hopes!

Hi I have a 4 year old chihuahua mix that scratches his ears a lot what can I do to help him?
This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to an otoscopic examination (to have a look inside ear canals and possibly perform a skin scrape or a ear canal sampling- this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). My 3 yr old CHIHUAHUA is constantly scratching inside his ear for long periods of time, I can't see anything but it sounds squishy, it does not seem to have an odor , and he won't let us near them
Poor Major! Excessive scratching of one or both ears is a common sign of an ear infection. You will need prescription ear meds from your veterinarian in order to treat this problem, so I would recommend taking him in for an exam when you are able to.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Typically dogs don’t have ear mites. If he is scratching at the ears, he could have an ear infection, a wax build up deep down, other skin mites that are microscopic or maybe allergies. I recommend taking him to the vet so they can look deep inside with a scope. They may have to test for an infection or try different medications. Once they look inside his ears and at the rest of his body they can give you a better diagnosis and treatment plan. Good luck and kisses to Chewy!

My Chihuahua Dallas has scabs on both his ears on the inside toward the top, I dont know where it came from, they dont go out side, and the top part of his ear are down not pointed up like they used to be.
Dallas is so cute, look at those ears! The scabs could be from him scratching his ears, which can be a sign of an ear infection. I'd have him checked out by a vet on Monday. If he does have an ear infection, the vet can treat him for it. Best of luck.

He will need to go to the vet to have an ear cytology performed so they can determine what exact type of infection he has (bacteria, fungal or ear mites) that is causing the issue.
