My Great Dane suddenly can't stand or walk, with a leg bump.

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | neutered | 175 lbs

My dog is suddenly unable to walk or stand. He holds his leg straight out. It will still bennd and move if i move it.he does not yelp, but doesnt like it. There is a small bump about the size if a quarter on it near his elbow. It seems kind of early for a bee sting, but may be possible. Gave him some aspirin and have him lying down Any ideas for me? He is a 4 1/2 yr old great dane

It could be Myles has strained or torn a ligament or muscle or he may have a problem with his back. Do not give him any more aspirin, it causes GI ulcers and bleeding in dogs. It's very concerning he is unable to stand or walk, and that tells me he is in a lot of pain. The best thing to do is take him into a vet now. The vet can diagnose what is causing his pain and can treat him. Best of luck.

Poor Axel! Because this swelling keeps getting bigger, I would be concerned that it is a cyst, a benign tumor, or a malignant tumor. I'm not sure what medications he was given, but clearly they aren't working if the swelling has gotten bigger. It's also concerning that he has stopped using the leg, not walking properly, and not eating. I would have Axel seen by the vet again today. I recommend having a fine needle aspirate done on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the swelling is found, the vet can discuss treatment options.

He really needs to see a vet for this. This lump is over a joint and it looks swollen in the photos. It is not recommended that you give any medications as that can skew the vet's exam. He is obviously in pain if he is not moving and whining. I suggest you get him to the vet today if at all possible.

Yesterday, a lump was found on my dog's right hind leg. Before I discovered it, I noticed she jumped up in the vehicle; but fell back a bit. She was walking fine yesterday; but today, she's walking VERY gingerly and wouldn't step up into the house.
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sage. Her mobility issues are most likely untelated to the new bump. She may be experiencing an exacerbation of age related arthritis if she fell a bit from the vehicle. This could make her very sore. Keep her quiet and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. She will need to see her veterinarian for an exam and possibly x-rays. Pain medication will likely be prescribed as well. The mass can be evaluated as the same appointment. A procedure known as a fine needle aspirate is commonly performed. The veterinarian will collect a small sample of cells to evaluate under the microscope. This will let you know if the mass is cancerous or not. It is a rare for a mass to affect mobility, but it is possible. I hope this information helps!

I have a 19 year old Pomeranian male. A few days ago on a walk he fell over. We brought him home rested him. Gave him a baby aspirin cut in half 81 mg.And he was fine the next few days. today his right hind leg can't walk on properly keeps falling
Oh no, poor Rusty! First off, do not give him any more baby aspirin. It's not safe to give to dogs as it can cause GI ulcers and bleeding. There could be a couple of things wrong with him at the moment. He is quite an old dog, and he could be suffering from arthritis. The pain from it could be severe enough that he can't walk properly on his right hind leg. He's also a toy breed dog, and they commonly suffer from a condition called a luxating patella. This is when the kneecap (patella) moves out of it's correct anatomical place, and if it becomes stuck outside it, then he couldn't use his leg properly. Finally, he could have torn or severely strained a ligament during his walk. Given that he can't walk properly and keeps falling over, plus the fact it's been a problem that keeps occurring, it's best that he sees a vet today. The vet can diagnose what is causing his problem with his leg and discuss treatment options with you. The vet can also give him some safe pain medicatio

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. When dogs are 'non-ambulatory'- not walking on a leg, this is usually a sign of significant pain. Also, swelling is concerning for either a significant injury (fracture/dislocation), an infection or abscess (pocket of pus), or in older animals we worry about cancers. I would recommend having Swayde seen by a vet to see if anything serious is going on, and would recommend x-rays. Best of luck with Swayde.

I have a 10 year old Great Dane and lately we noticed a later knot on his left front joint right above his paw.
Poor Diesel! Is he painful? You need to take him to your vet. In an older Great Dane, I am so sorry to tell you this but I would be most concerned about a possible bone tumor. Take him to your vet for an exam--they will likely recommend taking an X-ray. They can also prescribe some medication to help with pain. Don't hesitate to post again if you have any other questions.

Please stop giving Boss aspirin. It's really not safe for dogs, and causes GI ulcers and bleeding. Rest him. No walks, nothing. Just take him out to potty on a leash in the yard, and bring him right back in when he's done. Best of luck.

My lab mix is favoring his left front leg, and has issues with stairs. I can manipulate it, and the leg as well. There is no swelling and does not feel warm. I suspect an ankle sprain, and have given him a low dose aspirin. What else can I do for him
I would not recommend continuing with the aspirin, it can be dangerous for dogs. a bandage is probably not the solution either. if it is just a sprain then he should get better within a few days of complete rest (no stairs, no jumping and very short walks). if the problem persists then this is probably arthritis which is very common in large breeds. if this is the case you will have to take him to the vet in order to get treated as he will need dog specific medications for this condition.

My 6 y o Great Dane is suddenly unable to use her right hind leg. This started last night, she is refusing food and water.
This is very concerning. Bamboo likely has a lot of pain in that leg. Since she is a Great Dane there is a very large danger of her having osteosarcoma. Of course she could also just have sprained or hurt her leg, however I would definitely take her to your veterinarian tomorrow for an exam and x-rays. Refusing food and water is also a sign of great pain.

My dog hurt her leg the other day while we were sleeping. Looked a little swollen and so we gave her some aspirin. Today she has diarrhea and her back legs are weak. She wont eat or leave the bed.
Aspirin can cause stomach upset even when given at an appropriate dose, so it's possible that this is the reason for the diarrhea. I'm worried however that Roxanne's back legs seem weak. I'd recommend having her examined by a veterinarian. There are some diseases that can cause swelling and pain in multiple joints, or she could seem weak from dehydration.
