Why won't my dog eat and keeps throwing up clear foamy liquid?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered

This morning my dog didn't want to eat. He’s acting normal I took him out for a walk and since we came back he vomited twice (clear liquid/foamy) he still won’t eat. What can I do?

Common causes of vomiting and inappetence in a dog includes dietary intolerance or indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. You can do small, bland meals of cooked white rice and boiled chicken breast. If it lasts longer than 24 hours, Shadow should see the vet.

He could have an infection, parasite, upset stomach from something he ate, liver disease, kidney disease, pancreatitis, endocrine diseases, obstruction, etc. You could withhold food for the day and then try a bland diet of chicken and white rice and see if that helps. If the vomiting continues or he becomes lethargic than he needs to be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can run lab-work and take an x-ray, if needed, to help diagnose and then prescribe medication to treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-vomiting medication, fluids, and other medications depending on the cause.
