My senior dog has irregular breathing and eye discharge. What's wrong?

my ten year old Caron Terrier looks to be breathing at an irregular rate she has some eye discharge and received her yearly shots and a dose of hook worm medicine last Wednesday, she weighs 15 lbs

Breathing irregularly is a concern in a senior dog like Talula, it could be due to heart disease, a respiratory infection, or something more serious like cancer. The eye discharge can be due to an eye infection. I'd have her seen by a vet today for these issues to make sure she is ok.

Hello. Oh, dear, having breathing issues can be very serious. We have to think about heart or lung issues, including heartworm disease, bronchitis, pneumonia, or even heart failure. You do not mention how old your pet is as this may rule out some conditions, but any breathing issues are serious. The eye discharge can also be a reflection of a pet feeling unwell. I would strongly recommend having your vet examine your golden. Some problems can be eliminated/diagnosed pretty quickly & hopefully, any required treatments can be started & your pet will be feeling better very soon. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

So sorry that Madison is having this problem. I would be suspicious that it is all related but can't be absolutely positive without some diagnostic testing. The tumor may have spread to her nasal cavity and/or lungs causing the nasal discharge and trouble breathing. You could have her evaluated by your vet again and see if an antibiotic and/or anti-inflammatory might help with the nasal discharge. If there is a secondary bacterial infection than it might help.

My 12 year old dog has had slight eye discharge for about a week now. Last night, the skin under his left eye became very red and inflamed. Today, he has a lump under the same eye. The skin appears to be bloody. He's also had some vomiting. Help!!
Poor Jack. My concern is that he could be getting a secondary skin infection and irritation from the eye discharge. Also, what is causing his eye discharge in the first place? He could potentially have a corneal ulcer, clogged tear duct, or even an infection. I would see your vet for an exam so they can determine what is wrong with the eye and the skin under the eye. Your vet will be able to provide the appropriate medications and drops for both problems. As far as the vomiting, this can be caused by several different things including intestinal parasites, general GI upset, eating something they shouldn't and much much more. Your vet will be able to get more history about the vomiting and help you determine what could be the cause and how to make him feel better. I hope this helps!

These signs are very concerning. It sounds as though your dog is suffering from a condition affecting her respiratory system. This may be caused by a bacterial or viral infection, especially if it is affecting the pups as well. She needs to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Consider keeping her separated from the puppies until she can be seen by a vet. You may want to schedule an appointment for the puppies as well.

There are several different things that I would be concerned about. It seems that she has sumptims of a respiratory infection with the eye and nasal discharge. This may be also causing the heavier breathing. However, with any outdoor dog, if she has not been diligently kept up to date on heart worm prevention- this could be a cause. This requires a blood test to diagnose. The stiffness, lack of energy may be stemming from the other issues, but she also maybe suffering from arthritis, tick borne diseases, or other generalized infections. It is important to take her to a veterinarian for a work up ASAP. I really don’t think that deworming her for intestinal parasites is going to make any difference.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration and/or corneal ulcer. At least in these pictures, his cornea appears affected. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!

Your dog could have an upper respiratory infection, a neurological condition, could have reacted badly to something she has come into contact with, such as a cleaner, she may have contracted something from contact with another dog, there are a number of possibilities. These symptoms are serious enough that she should be seen by your vet right away. They will do an exam, labwork, possibly x-rays, and based on these results, your vet will have a better idea what is wrong with her and how best to treat it.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I'm sorry to hear Thor isn't feeling well, While it is possible that Thor may have a cold, I would be concerned by his lethargy and not wanting to eat. At his age, we do become concerned about several possibilities, including kidney disease, liver disease, GI issues, diabetes, or a growth of some kind. If he does not improve within 24 hours or begins to worsen, I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian, have any necessary testing done (xrays, bloodwork) to determine what may be going on, and start any treatment that may be needed to help resolve it. It sounds like he could have an eye infection or allergies. You could gently clean the discharge with a wet washcloth and then instill some artificial tears in his eyes, like GenTeal drops but he will need an antibiotic drop if he has an infection. Schedule an appointment with your vet for an examination.
