My rescue dog has hair loss on back. Is olive oil/ACV okay, or does she need a vet?

Hello how are you doing today? My name is Renee and I new to owning a dog I just rescue a dog not sure what breed she is or how old she is but she has hair lost on her back not sure if it's from flees or something Else she a house dog and I want to know if she is okay before inlet her play with the kids. I did give a good bath with. Olive oil and apple cider vinegar

Hi Renee! Wow, her skin looks really bad. She could have fleas but she could also have mange. Olive oil and apple cider vinegar will not treat either fleas or mange. You need to have her seen by a vet asap to have her skin condition diagnosed so it can be treated properly. Poor girl!

She could have a bacterial skin infection, allergic dermatitis, fleas, mites, ringworm, etc. It would be best to have a vet take a look at her to determine the cause. Your vet can do a skin scrape, cytology, or culture to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to help treat the problem. She may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, coritcosteroid, or other medications depending on the cause. Bathing her with a moisturizing shampoo, like HyLyt may also help.

It looks like she has a skin infection, likely secondary to having allergies. You can bathe her with a medicated shampoo, like Douxo Chlorhexidine, and see if the lesions resolve. Otherwise, she needs to be examined by a vet for an antibiotic to treat the infection.

Ouch! Dixie's skin certainly looks uncomfortable. Some dogs are allergic to fleas, whereby just a bite or two can make them extremely itchy, which can lead to skin infections and irritation. The most commonly affected skin sites are around the head/neck and tail base/back of the hind legs. The thickened appearance of Daisy's skin is likely due to chronic skin irritation and inflammation. Other possible causes of these skin changes include allergies to food or the environment, ringworm, mange or endocrine diseases (such as hypothyroidism). The excessive shedding that you have noticed from both dogs could be a normal seasonal occurrence or due the stress of moving to a new home. At this point, Dixie should be examined by a vet to establish the cause of these issues so that they can be treated with any necessary medications (such as antibiotics, antifungals, medicated shampoo, etc.). Hi we have two puppy's we found, that have mange. One female has it more than the male we have been trying to use olive oil to sooth her. We can not afford medical assistance please help
Olive oil will not treat mange or soothe her. It is just going to make a mess. It is best for you get veterinary assistance. The chance of this resolving on it's own is very small. I suggest you try a benzoyl peroxide shampoo like this one to help flush the mange mites out of the hair follicles: ( https://pethero.co.za/en/product/benzoyle-peroxide-shampoo/ ) Lather, let it sit for 10 minutes and then rinse. DO NOT get this in their eyes. Wash them every 2-3 days until it seems to be resolving. Once they are at least 8 weeks of age you can use the flea prevention Bravecto every 3-4 weeks. This actually will also treat mange. Thank you for submitting your question regarding George. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian to have his skin assessed. He could have an overgrowth of mites known as Demodex as this is common in younger dogs. Being a rescue dog, ringworm should also be ruled out. Allergies are also possible this time of year. His veterinarian will likely perform some skin tests. From there medications can be prescribed. I hope this information helps!

Poor Dappie! Hair loss, itching and skin irritation can be due to a number of issues, such as allergies, ringworm or mange. Any of these conditions can also lead to the onset of a bacterial skin infection, particularly since Dappie and your other dogs have been licking her skin lesions. Dappie should take a trip to her vet for further evaluation of her skin to determine the most appropriate treatment. Until you can get to the vet, be sure that she is receiving a high quality flea and tick preventative (such as Nexgard, Bravecto, or K9 Advantix II) regularly because fleas could exacerbate any underlying skin issue. You can also try putting an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent her from causing further skin irritation. A bath in an antimicrobial shampoo may be helpful, but her vet will be able to prescribe more effective medications. I hope that all goes well!

Blastomycosis causes nodules in the skin that develop draining tracts and I don't think your picture looks consistent with blastomycosis. Blastomycosis is a serious fungal infection and requires oral antifungal medications for treatment. Malassezia yeast can cause skin infections with hair loss, redness, and a distinct odor and some people claim that apple cider vinegar can help although more often treating the underlying cause (such as a food or environmental allergy) and giving oral medications and topical medications like ketoconazole are more helpful. I would not expect a decrease in appetite and weight loss from a malassezia infection. The bottom line is I think it sounds like you need to see your veterinarian for a thorough physical exam and potential some diagnostic testing.

My dog has lost her hair on her back end and hind legs and chews herself raw
Poor girl. This looks highly suspicious for a mite issue (Demodexx). This could also just be a really bad allergy. I would highly recommend taking Beretta to your vet to have her skin tested. The vet needs to do a skin scrape to confirm if this is a mite problem first. If so, then you do have some reasonable options for treatment. Treatment for mites nowadays can come in the form of a flea preventative such as Simparica, Nexgard, or Bravecto. These all treat for demodexx mites given once every 30 days. These are prescriptoin only medications. It also looks like Beretta has a secondary bacterial infection on her skin. You will need to have your vet put her on a short course of antibiotics to clear this up. Until you can get her seen, it is best to get her started on a good topical shampoo. My top pick here for something that doesn't require a prescription is Duoxo calm shampoo available online. Also daily pet fish oils are best for pets with skin allergies since they are

She could have demodex, ringworm, or a skin infection. She needs to be seen by a vet to diagnose. Your vet will need to do a skin scrape, cytology, and/or culture to determine the exact cause and then prescribe medications to treat. It is impossible to know the cause without doing an examination and testing.

Hi and thank you for using Boop by Petco. From the pictures, it appears Rosie has a severe skin infection that may be caused by a mite infection (mange) or flea allergy. She will need to be treated as soon as possible for this at your local veterinarian's office. Unfortunately, there is no home remedies for mange. Her skin infection (even if it is fleas) will need to be treated with antibiotics at your veterinarian's office. Using a monthly flea preventative will help prevent fleas from reoccurring. Please take her in as soon as possible. She really looks miserable in the pictures .
