My puppy ate sago palm. Should vet monitor him overnight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 12 days old | 22 lbs

Hello my puppy ingested a couple small pieces of a Sago Palm, not the seed but the leaf. I rushed him to the vet after seeing him doing it. They vet has out him on IV for today and is sending him home. The vet also said that his labs all came back normal. Is it normal to send a dog home and not at least monitor him overnight. The vet asked us to keep an eye on him for the next 72 hours. Shouldn't he be flushed with IV overnight?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Duke. You did the right thing by rushing him into the vet. It's good that his labs came back normal, and he was in IV fluids. Yes if he only a couple of small pieces, it can be normal to send him home after treatment and not keep him overnight. If you are very concerned, you can take him back into the vet. I hope this helps!
