My dog has belly warts. Is Neosporin the right treatment for them?

My pup has some growths on his belly that his regular vet said are warts and to put Neosporin on them and they should go away on their own but I'm concerned that she might be wrong. They are about the size of a dime combined

Oh wow, those are funny looking! Without seeing Alex in person, I can't say what is causing them or what is needed to treat them. I can say that I have never recommended using Neosporin to get rid of warts, as warts are caused by a virus and Neosporin is an antibiotic medication. I would have him seen by another vet for a second opinion.

It looks like the wart just got inflamed or traumatized. I would not worry about it. Cleaning it and applying Neosporin is perfect! Great job! I would keep it clean and keep applying the Neosporin until healed. Just DON'T use peroxide on it as that will inhibit healing. Hope this helps! Best wishes!

Did you mean to have a picture attached to your question? If so, unfortunately there was not one attached. Puppies often get “pimples/pustules. This is usually a skin infection called puppy pyoderma. However, other problems such as a bug bite are possible as well. A Small amount of neosporin is unlikely to cause any harm at this time. Most mild Cases of pyoderma will resolve on their own or with a medicated shampo. However more significant cases need antibiotic therapy. I would recommend that you monitor the area close for any change or other pustules to appear. If it doesn’t resolve in the next few days then I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Hi there. From what I can see in the photo, these bumps look consistent with a type of tumor called a sebaceous adenoma, which is a benign skin growth that is common in older small breed dogs. Sebaceous adenomas are harmless, and do not normally require any kind of treatment unless they are particularly large or located in an area where they're constantly being bumped and causing bleeding or drainage. In that case, they can normally be surgically removed without much difficulty. To be safe, I would recommend having them checked by your veterinarian in person, since it's not possible for us to make a definitive diagnosis from a photo. :)

Unfortunately, going to the vet is the best option, as you'd need to have the area examined in person and it would be impossible to tell the cause over the internet. Causes of hairloss and irritation can be from a number of things including allergies (potentially to the grass if it's touching, or something used on the grass such as fertilizer) to the environment, food, parasites, metabolic issues, or even skin infections if the area is spreading. Neosporin usually isn't good to put on a dog as it can make them ill if they lick it, and if its spreading even with at-home treatment it likely isn't helping. An Elizabethan (cone) collar can be used to prevent licking and chewing to see if it helps with irritation, and a T-shirt if you suspect the grass is irritating Bamboo's belly may help you rule this out as a cause. However, if it continues, having your vet take a look in person is needed.

Yes it is likely to be a bacterial follicolitis, which can be treated by applying a topical antibiotic ointment. If no results in the next 4 days are seen, a veterinary check up is required. That could be a growth, from an insect bite, or from an infection. In order for it to be treated properly, it needs to be diagnosed, which I cannot do from a picture. I would have Esme seen by a vet to have this diagnosed and treated.

You can clean it with soap and water and apply Neosporin to help with the bleeding and discharge. There are no other options at home. Your vet can examine it and discussed surgery options to remove it so you do not have to worry about further episodes of scratching or bleeding. I would recommend this is able since it is growing

My 16 yr old Male dachshund has this round skin issue on his belly. Just noticed it last night giving him a bath.
That looks like a skin infection - could be due to an injury. I suggest you use this product on him but you can also try Neosporin or other topical antibiotic cream. Small wound on front of neck. Need to know if I should wait a few days or take him in. It was under collars so I took them off. Should I try putting a small but of neosporin on it?
Shave the hair in the area until you see healthy skin (this lesion is liskely bigger than is obvious). Disinfect with a mild wound cleanser and disinfectant. You can then put some Neosporin on it. Should the lesion get bigger or start oozing you will need to take Hank to a veterinarian for a skin exam. This could be a bacterial skin infection or fungal infection. Disinfect his collar or throw it away. Do not put another collar on your dog until it has healed.

I'm sorry to hear that Sasha has been licking and developing these skin lesions. Her lesions look most suspicious for a bacterial skin infection, but could also be a result of ringworm or mange. Personally, I never find Neosporin to be overly effective in managing skin infections. Instead, I prefer using medicated antimicrobial shampoos, particularly those that are chlorhexidine-based (here is one example: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=27982). Since Sasha is licking herself, consider also keeping an e-collar (cone) on her when she is not supervised (i.e. overnight or when you are out of the house) to prevent further irritation/damage to the skin. Be sure to take Sasha to her vet when they are back from vacation for further evaluation because many skin infections require oral antibiotics for resolution.
