Why is my dog throwing up yellow after switching to new food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 6 years and 3 months old | 65 lbs

My dog weighs 65 pounds he is a 6 year old mutt. Lately he has moved from ole roy food to retriever brand food. Today was the first day he was fully weaned. He hasn't eaten any of his new food in about 3 hours. He woke up and threw up on the carpet. Before we knew it he threw up again and when we let him outside he threw up one more time from what I can see. It was yellow and phlegm (wasnt watery) and had no chunks in it. Could this be due to his new food? Hes acting normal still not lethargic

It could be due to the new food. I can give you a home remedy for Chance to se if that helps. Withhold food tonight, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

Yes, if you switched the food at once then it could definitely be the reason, even if you are transitioning gradually there could still be something in the new food she is not tolerating and thus causing vomiting.

It could be due to acid reflux if he's only vomiting in the morning. Do not try his old food, switching diets again can make this worse. Given this has been going on for three days, I'd have him seen by a vet for it.
