Why does my puppy scratch, have scabs, and smell bad after a bath?

My puppy keeps scratching and has scabs all over and smells funny even after a shower

It could be Patches has fleas, mites, or allergies causing the scratching, and could have a skin infection secondary to whatever it causing his scratching leading to the smell. I would have him seen by a vet for thing in the morning to have this diagnosed and treated.

Itchiness and scratching can be caused by various reasons such as fleas, mites ,fungal infection, bacterial infection and allergies. the first 4 needs to be ruled out before we start treating for allergies. in order to do that first de-flea Paco with a high quality flea treatment such as advantage spot on, if it doesn't help - take him to the vet in order to check for/treat the other possibilities. If everything is ruled out, then an allergy treatment can be started. Usually an hypoallergenic food is a good way to start together with anti histamines. if it doesn't help - the best solution is a medication called Apoquel which treats allergies with great success and without side effects.

Our dog has scabs all down his back that are very painful. It itches so bad that he scratches till it bleeds. His skin is very tender and pink. He is a long haired dog. Can you help us?
Thank you for your question. Patches must be pretty uncomfortable. There are several possible reasons for this type of itchiness. The first thing I recommend is make sure he has been treated for fleas. Even one little flea can trigger massive itching in a dog that is sensitive to them. Other things that can cause this type of itching are food allergies, environmental allergies, mites, and bacterial skin infections. When the skin becomes this damaged, a trip to your veterinarian is necessary. We often have to prescribe antibiotics to control local bacterial infections that can result from all the scratching. We also need to get the itching under control. Sometimes this means steroids, and sometimes we prescribe a medication specifically to control itching. A t-shirt can be used to protect the skin from further scratching while it heals. There are some over the counter anti-itch sprays you can try, but many times they are not strong enough. Pup 6 months. Since had her licks scratches constantly. Fee,t top of ears, nose, red and thinning hair. Belly red where no hair. Scrapes feet on carpet or grass as to be trying to scratch paw pads. Has bad odor.
Poor pup! There are a number of things that can cause excessive itching with redness and hair loss in a puppy this age. The most common possibilities would include allergies, fleas, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). Treatment recommendations will depend on what the underlying problem is, so I would recommend having Princess examined by a vet as soon as you can. He/she can do some simple skin tests to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate medication to treat it.

Have just brought a new puppy home. He is scratching himself a lot and the are little white dots/specks on his fur. He sleeps fine and it doesn't seem to be causing him discomfort. What do you think it might be.
He could just have some dry skin but could also have a skin infection, allergic dermatitis, etc. You could bathe him with a moisturizing dog shampoo and see if that helps. If not, have your vet take a look at him to determine the cause. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, or corticosteroid to help treat the problem. Make sure to use a monthly flea prevention, like NexGard, Revolution, Frontline, etc.

Our two puppies have skin irritation with scabs. They are scratching to the point they cry. We've tried flea baths thinking maybe they had fleas. But I have not seen any fleas on either of them. Would an antimicrobial or antifungal shampoo help
Poor pups! It sounds like they're very uncomfortable. There are a number of different things that can cause skin irritation and scabs like this in puppies. Fleas are a possibility even if you aren't seeing them - they can be very good at hiding in the fur! In addition, flea baths are not very effective in my experience. Other possible causes would include allergies, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so it's important to get a diagnosis first. In addition, most of these issues will require prescription medication to treat effectively. Because of this, I would recommend taking the puppies to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to. He/she can do some simple skin tests to help diagnose the problem and get them started on appropriate medication to treat it. You could certainly try an antibacterial or antifungal shampoo in the meantime, but there's no guarantee that it will help since we wou

Sahara has a bad odor and constantly scratching. I gave her an oatmeal bath and like hours later she has the smell again. What can it be?
It's likely Sahara has either a bacterial infection, a yeast infection or severe allergies. Less frequently, an underlying endocrine disease may also be the root cause. When bad odors won't go away with a bath, it generally indicates a problem. I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian so that she can have the correct diagnosis and receive appropriate treatment. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the itching and odor should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin

She could have demodex, ringworm, or a skin infection. She needs to be seen by a vet to diagnose. Your vet will need to do a skin scrape, cytology, and/or culture to determine the exact cause and then prescribe medications to treat. It is impossible to know the cause without doing an examination and testing.

Itching/scratching can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. I recommend making an appointment to have Ryder seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the itching you’ve noticed and to make sure it is treated appropriately. The vet may want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. In the meantime, you can bathe Ryder in hypoallergenic shampoo for dogs to clean the area, but this will likely not resolve the itching.

Itchy skin is often due to the following things: 1) Allergies - this can happen suddenly and is usually due to an environmental (i.e pollen) cause. https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-tell-if-your-pet-has-allergies/ 2) External parasites - fleas, lice and mites can all cause intense itching. It's good to check him for fleas again and get treatment if needed. Dogs should normally be bathed no more than once a month with a shampoo that is labeled for dogs. If you bathe more than that, or use a shampoo or soap that is meant for people, then you could be damaging the normal protective barrier of the skin. One thing you can do for itchy skin, is give a bath with cool water using an oatmeal or aloe shampoo. You can get these shampoos at the pet store.

Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics).
