Why is my bulldog screaming with sudden hip pain and limping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Female | spayed | 3 years old | 36 lbs

Hello, I have a 3 year old English bull dog! Over all she is in great health- no on going health issues, no medications- but strict diet. Last night prior to putting her in her crate, she was perfectly fine. This morning, she will not put any weight on her right leg. She has it a bit curled up, and screams in pain if you move her or touch the leg. Upon investigation, it seems to be coming from her hip.

Poor Grace. It may be she injured her hip in the crate. I'm concerned about the screaming when you move or touch the leg. Unfortunately there are no pain relievers you can give her at home. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I'd take her into a vet now to get treated.

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Layla's care today! Lameness and/or pain in a limb can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least pain control medications can be prescribed. The one thing you can consider doing at home in the mean time is limiting her activity as much as possible which helps in some cases. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
