My dog eats grass and throws up. Is this normal or a problem?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My small 15lb maltese cross periodically - with some urgency, runs into the garden and munches grass for 10-15 minutes. Several hours later she regurgitates 4-5" mucus bound grass, and or defecates a similar amount. This practice can continue the next day. Subsequently she is back to normal. Is this problem due to feeding her too much protein. Mike Horton

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. No, this is unrelated to the protein your dog is receiving. Some dogs will eat grass and vomit if they're feeling ill or nauseated. Other dogs are simply grazers and it doesn't necessarily indicate pathology. If your dog seems uncomfortable, has a decreased appetite, is vomiting up food, or losing weight then I would have this checked out by a vet. If it's an occasional issue that self-resolves and she's otherwise doing great, then I'd be less concerned.

Some dogs do like to ingest grass. Some do it regularly and others when they have an upset stomach. I would just monitor him closely for additional vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or decreased appetite. If these occur, I would recommend bringing him in for an examination by his vet.
