My unspayed dog is sick, limping, green discharge. What should I do?

Hi! My dog has been sick for about 2 days now. At first, all I saw was limping and a reduced appetite, so I assumed she just hurt her leg and will recover as she rests. However, I recently saw a long green line coming from her vagina and at first I thought it was a leaf, but my sister immediately said it wasn't. I found some explanation online as to what it is (she isn't spayed), but I can't explain the limping. Now, she's very sad, tired, and won't eat. What should I do?

Take Beauty into a vet immediately, She may have a pyometra, which is fatal without treatment. Focus on getting that looked at first before worrying about the limping. Limping won't kill her, but an untreated pyometra will.

    I am sorry to hear about Storm. This could most definitely be pyometra if she is leaking liquid from her vulva. If this is the case, this is a medical emergency and she needs to be seen right away, especially if she has been sick for days. The treatment for pyometra is surgery to remove the infected utereus. The vet will examine her and recommend imaging (such as x-ray or ultrasound) to check for an enlarged/fluid filled uterus and bloodwork to see just how sick Storm is and what kind of supportive care is going to be needed. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. It would make her lethargic, not want to move much, reduce her appetite, and will be painful. It could also be that she injured herself causing these symptoms. Because I can't see her in person and rule out a pyometra, my recommendation would be to monitor her very closely. If you see any discharge coming from her vaginal area, her belly becomes larger, she starts vomiting, and/or won't move at all, these can be signs of a pyometra and she absolutely cannot wait until tomorrow to see a vet. In that case, rush her into an ER vet; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet will be found on a clinic's answering machine or website. I would hold off on food after midnight tonight and do not give her any breakfa

I would have Hennessey seen by a vet immediately. I would be very concerned that this heavy bleeding, lethargy, and bloating is caused by a pyometra. A pyometra is a serous infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. Using a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays, the vet can diagnose if she does have a pyometra and can treat her for it. Should she have one, spaying her is part of the recommended treatment. Please take Hennessey into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her now.

I'm sorry Piggy isn't doing well! The lump under her skin could be caused by a local inflammatory reaction to the vaccine, but it should have resolved by now. That is something that should be seen by the vet. I am very concerned that she has a greenish discharge coming from her vagina, and she could be suffering from a condition called a pyometra. If only her ovaries were removed during her spay, then the uterus remains and is still prone to developing an infection. She could also have a stump pyometra. This is when the remnants of the uterus become infected, and while it's not common, it is serious when it occurs. Finally, she could be suffering from vaginitis, an infection of the vagina. Homeopathic sepia will not treat any of these. If she still has her uterus, it will need to be removed and she will need antibiotics. A stump pyometra will also need to be treated surgically, and will require antibiotics. Vaginitis requires antibiotics. She should see a vet immediately to

Lola is extremely sick. I see that she is unspayed, and her symptoms could be caused by a pyometra. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. You have to take her into a vet immediately.

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco!. So sorry to hear about Boo Boo. Unspayed female dogs can suffer from a uterine infection called pyometra. It normally occurs 30-60 days after a heat cycle. Signs include lethargy, pain in the belly, increased thirst, increased urination, nausea, vomiting, decreased or no appetite. If this is the case you need to have her evaluated immediately. These infections can become a serious problem very quickly. Your vet can assess her and then advise some blood work and imaging studies to diagnose such as x-rays or ultrasound. The treatment for this is to spay her (ovariohysterectomy) and remove her infected reproductive tract. These dogs may or may not have a thick, pus like discharge from their vulva. Again it could be something else like an infection somewhere else, inflammation, internal organ disease but with the history and known status of the dog, I would assume pyometra until proven otherwise. Please get her evaluated right away

I would be very concerned about Bubbles, and take her into a vet immediately. I see that she isn't spayed, which means she can develop a life threatening infection of the uterus called a pyometra. A pyometra is fatal without treatment, and it causes vomiting, weakness, and lethargy, all signs she is showing. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain if she has one or not, but because of the seriousness of a pyometra I would take her into vet now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. I believe it would be better to have an ultrasound done first, preferably by a specialist, to confirm there is indeed a uterine infection. i have seen in the past cases such as Olive, where other symptoms of pyometra where absent (normal bloods, normal xray, no excessive urination, no vaginal discharge) and the dog ended up having a uterine infection after all, it can be sometimes difficult to diagnose. on the other hand these symptoms could fit many other diseases and in her condition it might be a little risky to put her through a surgery, especially if your vet is not 100% sure. at the end of the day it's up to you but you do need to make a fast decision.

I'm sorry Angel isn't feeling well at the moment! Anorexia and lethargy are very general signs of illness, and they could be caused by systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. Given that it just started, I would monitor her for now. Should she still be lethargic and anorexic after 24 hours, or she develops other signs such as vomiting and diarrhea, then I would have her seen by a vet.

I see that Jess isn't spayed, and this discharge from her vulva indicates a pyometra. So do her other symptoms. This is a medical emergency, as a pyometra is fatal without treatment. See if someone can take her into a vet now for you.
