My cat's eyelid has a bump after a fight. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 11 days old

Cat got into a fight with strays, got the skin around eye scratched but no damage to the real eye. Took him to the vet’s yesterday and today. He overall has had 2 antibiotic shots, 1 painkiller shot and 1 rabies shot. His wounds were treated with disinfectants yesterday. He seems completely fine but there is a random abscess on his lower eyelid which is wounded. Can this be fatal or emergency worthy?

That does not look like an abscess on the lower eyelid. It looks more like a stye (localized glandular infection). I would recommend taking your cat into the vet to make sure that it is a style and not something else but I don't think it's an emergency. In the meantime, there are few things you can do. Apply hot water to a clean cloth. Wring out the excess water and then gently press the warm, damp cloth to the affected eye. This will help to reduce swelling and inflammation. Keep the eye area clean.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly the site of a mild infection, inflammation or even a small growth. For this reason, I think it would be best to have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If he is otherwise doing well, I do not think it is an emergency and it should be ok to wait until Monday as long as Taz is otherwise doing well and he is not actively bleeding. Treatment would be based on findings. I do not think that there is any good at home therapy especially since it is still unclear what the actual cause is. He is adorable! Good luck!
