Why is my cat's poop firm at first, then soft or watery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Exotic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 10.2 lbs

My cat has a stool problem...the first part of the stool seems normal but towards the end it get's soft or even watery. Sometimes he has normal stool, starts to cover it with litter, and some watery or very soft stool comes out and drops on the ground (outside the box). This has been happening with varying frequency since I got him at 6 months (he is 3.5 yrs now).. over the years I've tried 5 different no grain foods (1 was limited ingredient) but the problem persists. He is on orijen now.

A vet visit to rule out any GI issues or underlying health conditions is always a good idea. You can also ask your vet for a pet probiotic, or try adding in a tsp of plain (not sugar free) yogurt to Min Min's meals which may help with the stool.
