My turtle has white stuff on its mouth and neck when basking. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Reptile | Aquatic Turtle | Male | unneutered

Donatello has a white mucus substance that is on his mouth and some on his neck area. The substance seems to form when he is basking and comes off once he enters the water. He is very active and eating. No abnormal behavior. We have had him for a week so I understand he may still be adjusting to his new environment. Should I be worried?

The skin of turtles periodically (and normally) sheds off in pieces. In the water, it appears as whitish, "fuzzy" stuff coming off the skin that people may mistaken for fungus or other disease. I would not be worried about it at this stage. Check the shell closely for any signs of abnormalities in the shell suggesting disease. If you are not sure then see your veterinarian.
