My dog's ankle is swollen. What pain relief can I give her until vet?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 40 lbs

My 8 year old shepherd has spine problems and drags her hind legs. I noticed that one of her ankles is swollen really bad and she seems to be in a good bit of discomfort. She takes tramadol for her back pain what else can I give her for pain just to get her through the weekend? We luve far from a emergency vet

Unfortunately there are no OTC pain medications you can give Dusty. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Rest her as much as possible this weekend. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to potty on a leash, and bring her right back in when she's done. Have her seen by a vet on Monday.

Please do not give anything for pain unless it is specifically prescribed by your vet. The human pain relievers such as Tylenol, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, ibuprofen, etc. are all toxic to dogs. Just try to keep his movements to a minimum until he is checked by the vet.

Unfortunately there are no OTC medications you can give Covie, many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. He sounds extremely painful if he can't walk on his leg, and he cannot wait until Thursday to see a vet. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

My dog was outside for 5 min, I looked out the window and she wasn't putting any weight on her back leg. I had to carry her inside. I tried putting slight pressure on different points on her leg and she didn't yelp or anything. There's nothing stuck

My dogs paw is swollen, I'm going to take him to vet tomorrow but is there anything I can give him for the pain? I'm worried he will keep licking at it until I return from work to take him to the vet.
Human over the counter pain medications can be toxic to dogs so do not give her any. She will need a prescription pain medication made for dogs. If she is bothering the leg than you could get an E-collar at a pet store to prevent her from licking the leg while you are at work. Otherwise, call your vet and see if you could drop her off in the morning on the way to work and have them examine/treat her leg and keep her for the day.

My dog got her leg stuck in the door, and now it's tender. It's not broken but seems sore. Is there an over the counter pain relief I can give her?
Unfortunately no. Many human pain medications are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. I recommend resting her for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a leash, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she still appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe.

My dogs paw is swollen..the big one..what can I give to him?
Poor Rex! Unfortunately, there are no safe OTC medications you can give him, as many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. You can try soaking his paw in an Epsom salt bath to see if that helps with the swelling. If it doesn't, he will need to see a vet on Monday. He may have an infection in his paw or he could have a foreign body causing the swelling. The vet can diagnose what is causing the swelling so Rex can be treated.

She sounds very painful, and it would be best if she saw a vet tonight. You can take her into an ER vet clinic; if you don't have one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. You can't give him anything over the counter. If it just started you can let Tech rest for a few days with minimal walking and minimal physical exercise, if it does not improve within 3-4 days you will have to take him to the vet in order to get it checked and treated, he might need pain killers for a few days (prescription only). if the vet think it's something more serious such as a fracture, joint injury or foreign body, he might recommend to have an xray done as well.

My dog got his foot stuck in the door and it's not swollen or warm to touch it's just painful. What can I give him
Unfortunately, there are no over the counter human pain medications that are safe for pets. If he will allow, you can use an ice pack wrapped in a towel or a frozen bag of peas to put on the foot and help with swelling. Try to limit his activity to allow the foot time to rest. If he starts limping, or if the swelling has not gone down in 24-48 hours, I recommend that Titus see a vet for appropriate pain medications.

Poor Willow! Unfortunately no, there are no safe effective over-the-counter pain medications for dogs. The best thing to do for her is minimize her activity and keep her quiet until she can get to the vet. If she needs help getting around, you can loop a towel under her tummy to use as a sling and take some of the weight off her legs. I would discourage even giving aspirin, as anything you give may interfere with the medications your vet may start tomorrow. If her pain level is excessive and you feel she can't wait that long, the next best thing would be to take her to the nearest emergency vet. I know it's hard to see our pets in pain! Hope she feels better soon.
