Dog's blood test: high ALP and neutrophils. Is Loxicom safe?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 15 years and 11 months old | 66 lbs

Since two days Rusty was in severe pain and he couldn't even walk at all. See by emergency vet to prescribed Vetergesic inj stat and Gabapentin 300mg twice daily. Yesterday, my vet did some blood tests before starting him on Loxicom. She informed me that I can start Rusty onLoxicom as liver is ok. Today I sent copy of the results to my pet physio and was worried due to high level of ALP and high Neuthrophils meaning (according to her) there is an infection somewhere apart from the anaemia.

Your pet physio is not a vet, and there is not able to diagnose Rusty or his lab reports. Yes his ALP is a bit elevated, but typically vets do not worry about the ALP being elevated unless it goes above 500. He is well below that. I would follow your vet's instructions.

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. Unfortunately ALP is such a vague value and does not tell us much in the way of specific diseases that it is not a very useful value. In older dogs with a high ALP, this may be a normal finding not related to any disease. Cushing's disease can cause an elevated ALP along with many other causes. If the ALP continues to rise or does not resolve, I would consider testing for Cushing's disease and have an abdominal ultrasound performed. Bronchitis and a tooth infection generally would not cause an increase in this value in my experience. I hope this helps! My dog has had blood tests his result for liver enzyme ALP is 184 it was 286 four weeks ago. The vet was not there to explain results can you please help
A mild increase in ALP is not particularly significant in my opinion in the absence of clinical signs or other hematologic changes. I would recheck the values in another 3-6 months for changes unless there are clinical signs of illness sooner. Other more aggressive diagnostics could be done however just to be sure nothing is wrong include ultrasound or other advanced imaging techniques (CT , MRI). There are also liver supplements such as Denamarin or Denosyl that help provide liver support. They are extremely effective in lower liver enzymes back to normal. Hope this makes sense.

Hi Experts, My vet suggested to do a blood test because my dog wasn't eating much. In the report, the level of Alkaline Phosphatase is much higher than Normal. My vet suggested Belamyn Injection for seven days. Attached is the photo of the report. C
That ALP level is not that high. This would not concern me at all. We don’t get concern about this and call it abnormally high until it gets over about 350-400. The Belamyl injection is just vitamin B12. That is fine to do. It may or may not help, but it will not hurt to give the injections.

My two and a half female lab is having High tlc count near 33000 and sgot and sgpt is also high,she is acting normal,the vet is giving her DNS and D25 through IV and dexamethasone and ampicillin ..what can.be the cause n what treatment will suit her.
SGOT or ALP and SGPT or ALT typically indicate a problem with the liver. ALT is much more specific and AST can be elevated from a number of other things. This could be due to an infection due to the TLC (total leukocyte count or total white blood cell count). It is possible that she also is having an allergic reaction systemically and the veterinarian is treating her for this using the dexamethasone or to reduce any inflammatory processes that could be going on. Intravenous fluid therapy and supportive care are really the best for her right now. I would consider further diagnostic testing such as abdominal ultrasound to find out why these values are elevated, as there may be an explanation on the ultrasound. I would also test her urine for infection. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Luna's Alkaline Phosphatase levels are 350 (normal range is 3-73). The vet has suggested a low carb diet and prescribed Demanarin capsules and Vitamin B supplements. What could be the reason of the elevation?
She is a puppy. An elevated ALP is normal in puppies. ALP can go up because of liver problems, but also increases during bone growth. I see this elevation in about 80% of puppy bloodwork. I do not treat this as it it is not a problem and the value becomes normal when they stop growing. If there are other liver values elevated, then I am concerned, but ALP alone is not generally a problem. Per IDEXX, one of the largest veterinary pathology services in the United States, ALP values in puppies can be elevated 4 times normal (which is about where Luna is.) Denamarin, Vitamin B, and a low-carb diet will not hurt Luna, but they probably won’t change the ALP either. Best wishes to you and Luna.

I suggest your vet take a fine needle aspirate (FNA) biopsy of the tumor to find out what kind of a tumor this is. He would be taking a little bit of tissue from the tumor painlessly with a fine needle which helps determine what kind of a tumor this is. As for the elevated Alkaline Phosphatase level: this could be a sign of liver disease/gall bladder disease or bone cancer in your dog. However, if your dog had bone cancer, it would likely have some bone pain somewhere. 51% of dogs over 8 years have a high ALP. Because there are so many causes of a high ALP, many of which are benign (harmless) processes, determining the cause of an individual dog's high ALP is difficult. Your vet may want to refer you to a veterinary internal specialist. Joint pain can also be caused by arthritis, and the lethargy could be caused by pain or disease

Hello, thank you for your question about Daisy. There are numerous causes for elevated ALP in dogs, many of which you have ruled out by the testing described. Some dogs can experience a condition called vacuolar hepatopathy, a benign condition that we can sometimes not identify the reason for. Many of these dogs demonstrated no symptoms even with a significantly elevated ALP. There is no specific ALP level that will lead to symptoms in dogs, it is very patient dependent (some dogs are much more sensitive to mild changes). I would recommend having her liver values monitored every 4-6 months, or sooner if she develops any signs such as vomiting or inappetance. Additionally, I would consider adding Denamarin/Denosyl to her treatment regimen. Although this may not normalize her ALP it can help prevent further elevation of the value in the future. This supplement is unlikely to influence any liver enzymes and can be stopped anytime if there is any suspicion of that. ALP is elevated but moderately and I would not focus on that. Albumin is low and that is a main concern at the moment. Vomiting should be treated with symptomatic medications. If there is high temperature, antibiotics should be given/continued. Hello, and thanks for using Boop by Petco. You're right that Ghontu tested positive for Ehrlichia - but keep in mind that is an "antibody" test, meaning it tests for *exposure* to a disease and doesn't necessarily mean she has Ehrlichia. If a dog is exposed to Ehrlichia and their immune system does its job and successfully clears the body of the Ehrlichia infection, they will still show a positive result on that test. So it's not cause for panic! I defer to your regular vet to determine how worried they are, based on Ghontu's exam and other findings. If they feel treatment is appropriate, they will probably start Ghontu on a 4-week course of medication. The ALP is a bit elevated, but that elevation is quite mild and wouldn't have me too worried. Again, I would defer to your usual vet. But unless they had reason to worry about the ALP specifically, I wouldn't think twice about that ALP value. Hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. The ALP is quite high but this also depends on their reference ranges there. The symptoms you are describing could be consistent with a condition called hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's disease) which is when there is excessive steroid production in the body due to a pituitary tumor or adrenal gland mass. There is treatment for the disease but it needs to be confirmed first. If you want to know for sure, testing such as an ACTH or low dose dexamethasone test should be performed. You can try using melatonin and flaxseed lignans to treat cushings disease naturally. I have had some cases respond to this treatment but not 100%. Also, I see that cre is 18. If this is creatinine, this is very high. Again, this depends on the machines reference range, calibration and unit of measure. Creatinine elevates typically with renal disease, which could also explain the increased thirst. If you attach a picture and repost to the forum
