Why is my puppy always hungry even after eating? What to do?

Okay so my puppy is a rescue. He’s gained weight and I feed him. But he acts like he’s never full. Is there something else I could give him to help fill him up?

Make sure Klaus doesn't have intestinal worms, as that can cause a puppy to be hungry all the time. Have him seen by a vet for a health check. Also make sure you are feeding him enough food. Read the label on his bag of food to see if you are feeding him the correct amount daily.

If your puppy's body condition looks good (i.e., his ribs aren't sticking out and he has a good covering of soft tissue around his backbone and hips), then I wouldn't necessarily feed him more just because he's still acting hungry - many dogs act hungry all the time, regardless of how much they're fed, and would be quite fat if you fed them as much as they wanted :) With puppies, we don't want them to be overly chubby because this is very hard on their bones and joints as they grow. If you aren't sure if your pup is too thin or too chubby, you can request a one-on-one consultation with one of us and upload a photo for us to look at. Or, you could take him to your vet for a check-up and ask his/her opinion on his body condition.

Read Nero's bag of food to see if you are feeding him enough, it will tell you the amount he should be getting daily. Also have him seen by a vet to make sure there isn't a medical reason behind him being so hungry, like intestinal worms.

He’s telling you you’re not feeding him enough. I judge the amount to feed a growing puppy by how they eat. They should be hungry at each meal, and almost finish the food. If he’s ravenous then I gradually increase the amount at each feeding, and also add another meal. If he’s growing quickly you want him to have enough nutrition. As he grows he may not eat as much later and not want the extra meal. It’s fine then to go to three or two meals daily. I don’t worry about them getting fat until they are six months to a year old, then certainly at that point or when he’s fully grown you can reduce the amount or change the food to diet food. Puppies will eat themselves sick if you allow it. Portion sizes for puppies are not one size fits all. Check the back of the bag of food. Manufacturers frequently provide feeding guidelines based on your puppy's age and weight. Feed 3-4 times daily then decrease as the puppy matures until you are feeding twice daily. Since he is extremely food driven, use this to your advantage when training.

It may just be habit, that he appears hungrier. Since he is a healthy weight, he is obviously getting enough to eat. Try feeding him his daily ration over three feeds a day. This may keep the hunger away. Should he lose condition or get thinner, you should make an appointment with your veterinarian for a wellness exam. Worms usually are not visible in the stool unless there is a huge rate of infection. So he could still have worms and worming him won't hurt. You can also take a fresh stool sample to your vet for a fecal exam.

He is lovely! Quite often with lurcher puppies you find that you cant fill them even though they are healthy. I would double check his weight and calculate what his daily ration should be. I would feed this in 3 meals and recommend a slow feeding bowl. If you notice any signs of ill health such as vomiting or diarrohea I would have him checked by a vet in case he has a tummy issue.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Vomiting is definitely not normal, and really, neither is being ravenous. The first thing that always comes to mind in young puppies with GI issues is intestinal parasites, but with this amount of vomiting I would also be very concerned that there could be a foreign body blocking either her stomach or intestines. Puppies will, of course, chew and eat many things, and while I hope this is not the case with Josie Mae, this needs to be ruled out very promptly by your veterinarian. X-rays of the abdomen should provide the information that is necessary to see whether this could be a possibility. If she doesn't have a blockage, it's time to submit a fecal sample for testing, since intestinal parasites can cause vomiting (and diarrhea) and can also cause a puppy to feel ravenous. Once parasites have been addressed, I would also consider feeding a better diet, as Pedigree is not considered great nutrition. Both Hill's and Royal Canin make great puppy diets and

If you can't see his ribs then he is eating enough. It is best not to overfeed them. They look to you for food as a bond. They are not necessarily hungry. Puppies go through growth spurts where they look thinner and heavier until they are adults. As long as you are feeding according to the instructions on the bag of food, you are probably feeding him just fine.

My dog eat very good every day but he is skinny
I would recommend a really good deworming since he is young. However it would be best to take a fecal to the vet to determine if he has parasites and if so what kind. If he does not have any parasites I would recommend a food change. I would try a basic diet like purina, royal canine, or science diet puppy food.

Puppies do tend to have large appetites because they are growing so quickly. I'd first make sure you are feeding her a puppy formulated food. Puppies need higher amounts of calories, protein, and calcium than adult dogs, and a puppy formulated food would provide that for Bonnie. I would recommend feeding her a high quality puppy formulated food, such as Royal Canin or Hills Science diet. Finally, I recommend feeding according to the package instructions on the food to make sure she is getting the correct amount, and avoid giving her human food, as there are many that are poisonous to a dog.
