My dog won't eat his food and is food guarding. What's wrong?

Hi my dog is a Indian breed. , Don't know why dog isn't eating his food we feed him milk and rice (sometimes other stuff also) on top of that he is food guarding he doesn't let us approach him too can someone please help us.

It could be Sakru is food aggressive if he's guarding his food. You should not give him milk, as dairy causes stomach upset in dogs. The other food you are giving him probably keeps him from eating his dog food, and you should just give him dog food only. Have him seen by a vet for his food guarding.

Given a choice, most dogs will eat table food before dog food. Discontinue feeding cheese. Feed Sultan on a consistent schedule. Dogs thrive on routine. Prepare his dog food and leave it down for 15-20 minutes. Afterwards, pick it up whether he has eaten or not. Repeat at the next scheduled mealtime. Do not offer any other food or treats between meals until Sultan is eating his own food regularly. You can add warm water or a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate his appetite. Mix well to prevent him from picking it out though.

My dog (nearly 3yrs) will not eat his food but he will eat treats and other human food. This came on about three days ago after I suddenly changed his canned food because I couldn't find it in the store. Do you think he is sick or just picky?
A sudden change in food can cause digestive upset so it is possible the new food is upsetting his stomach. I would try to find the old food and start him on it again to see if it helps. I would also avoid any people food or treats especially if he is being picky or has stomach upset, as these could be making things worse. If he doesn't improve even back on the old food, or shows additional signs of illness, a vet visit is always best.

Hi, and thanks for your question. This is a quite generic but concerning presentation. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food. A check up is needed if inappetence lasts for more than 24hours. This could be him being fussy because you are giving him other options, but it could also be a sign that something is wrong, maybe an upset stomach. try insisting with the dog food, if he doesn't eat it- take him to the vet to get it checked.

My dog has not been eating well for last week. He eats at night. If we feed him pedigree he will eat it but if we feed him his regular food he refuses.

Causes of a decrease in appetite are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infection, he ate something gross that is upsetting his stomach, he ate something that is stuck, food allergy/intolerance, Inflammatory Bowel disease, Addison's disease, new treat/food/table food. Sometimes this can be behavioral as well, he is waiting for something better like the Pedigree. If there is not other symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy then that is likely the problem. If you recently got a new bag of his food the company may have changed the formula or there is a issue with that bag of food. If you really don't want to feed him Pedigree then hold your ground. Offer his normal food, you can add water to it to make it more tempting, and if he doesn't eat it then pick it up. Do not offer treats or any other food and then he is not fed again until his next meal time. You can also consider feeding him once daily. If he is otherwise sick, please repos

It may be that Milo is just being a picky eater. If he's receiving any people food or treats, it is best to stop those for a few days and only offer his food in his bowl. Dogs will not starve, and once hungry enough he should start eating again. However, if you are seeing any signs of illness in addition to his refusal to eat, such as vomiting or diarrhea, this may indicate an underlying issue instead which should be checked out by your vet.

Any dog that all of a sudden acts aggressive it is usually due to some type of pain in the body. If he is not eating he may have an intestinal obstruction and that is painful. I suggest you get him to a vet for an exam.

Dogs and cats are actually lactose intolerant and ingesting milk isn't an appropriate diet for an almost adult lab. Bruno needs to eat a commercial adult dog food. If he doesn't like what you are feeding him: add water or a little canned food with or without water or change brands of food. I am not sure based on your post if his appetite change is a new thing. My 7 year old German Shepherd mix has recurring stomach growling and refusal to eat. What might cause this?
Unfortunately, those are very vague symptoms with many potential causes. If it just started up recently, minor GI upset such as getting into something Eddy shouldn't have, eating too many treats or people food, etc can cause it. Picking up his food for a few hours then offering a bland meal of boiled chicken and rice may help and also encourage him to eat. Other causes could be a range of things including internal parasites, food allergies leading to gas production or GI upset, eating something that made him ill, getting into something toxic, foreign bodies, underlying illnesses, medical conditions, etc. If he continues to have these symptoms, won't eat anything at all, or has new symptoms appear such as vomiting, diarrhea, etc, seeking out veterinary care in person ASAP is best.

It is possible that he doesn't like his food for some reason, especially since he seems to want to eat other food. You could try a different food but switching foods abruptly can cause vomiting and diarrhea in some dogs so it would be a good idea to mix the foods together and gradually switch to a different brand. If his appetite continues to be decreased then he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause.
