My dog has tapeworms. Is it safe to combine dewormer with Heartgard?

Hello, my dog is on Heartguard plus for protection against hookworm but has a suspected tapeworm infection can fenbendazole as a dewormer be given while he is also on heartguard which is praziquantel? Thank you

You can give him Drontal, which kills tapeworms. Heartgard contains ivermectin and pyrantel pamoate, while Drontal contains praziquantel which is needed to kill tapeworms. Do not give them that the same time, but it's fine to give a day or two apart.

No worries. There is a wide safetly margin with the amount of dewormer a pet can have in one sitting. Olive will be just fine with the dewormer and heartworm prevention given at the same time. : ) In fact we give heartworm prevention and bi-annual dewormers together all the time. I have given my puppy advocate and drontal plus together and it justdawned on me that my vet said we shouldnt gove them together
Generally we recommend to give advocate first followed later by drontal but as a rule the two products do not have any additive effects or reactions. Non-urgent meds are usually best separated and advocate and drontal should be separated because of the flea-tapeworm lifestyle. Certain fleas contain tapeworm larvae which hatch when swallowed; once you have killed all the fleas you would then follow on with tablet to kill any tapeworms. Monitor for any strange behaviors and report to your vet with this history of it occurs within 24hrs but this is very unlikely

Did you mean Pyrantel? Yes, it's ok to give pyrantel along with her normal heartworm prevention. make sure to have her stool checked again after treatment to be sure the infection is cleared. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Is Ivermec for heartworms safe to use with nexgard?
Yes it is safe to use these medications together. Just make sure you are using the ivermectin dose for heartworms or better yet a pre made heartworm product with ivermectin (Heartgard or otherwise). I hope this helps and thank you for using Boop by Petco!

The dewormer i usually recommend is called Drontal plus, bear in mind that unlike the flea/tick products, dewormers do not protect your dog from future infestation, it only kills the worms on spot. for fleas and ticks i usually recommend Bravecto tablet or Advantix spot on. all these medications are considered to be high quality and safe.

Yes! It should be okay to give both pills at the same time. You might want to stagger them the first time by a day or two just in case you happen to see some nausea or other adverse effects, but after that give both at the same time.

Heartguard Plus also controls roundworms and hookworms, so there is no need to give the Nemex 2 now. However you should give your puppy Nemex in about two to three weeks in order to hit the worms that hatch from the eggs the Heartguard did not catch.

Hello. I got a new puppy on the 13th of september(11weeks old at the time) on the 15th i gave her both a flea tablet credelio and over the counter round worm dewormer. on the 16th i gave her milbeguard for heartworm. She then has poop live very small
None of the products you have administered will treat for tapeworms. Tapeworms need to be treated with a special dewormer called Praziquantel. You can give it now. Great question! I highly recommend Drontal. It kills tapeworms, hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms, and it's an excellent deworming treatment. You can get it by prescription from your vet, and it's safe to use with Revolution :-)
