Dog limping after fall, unsure if sprain. Should I still see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Morkie | Male | neutered | 10 years and 1 month old | 7 lbs

My dog tried to go up on the couch but missed and started limping on his back left leg. And couldn't lift his leg for the rest of the day. We gave him gabapentin to help with his pain. The next day he was able to lift leg and walk with no obvious limping but he was still hurt you can tell. The 3rd day was a little better. He's eating and drinking normally and doing his business. Cant tell if its sprained or strained...Should I still take him to the vet? Or give him time to heal?

Yes, still take him to the vet. They will likely want to take an X-ray in addition to the exam to rule out any tears, sprains, or breaks that may need treatment. Until you can get to your vet, continuing the strict kennel-rest can help reduce any further injury.
