Is it a red flag if pet food won't show 'as fed' caloric info?

Hi Melanie, if a pet food company will not provide you with a caloric distribution coming from protein, calories and fat on an as fed basis, not just dry matter, is this a red flag for the company? this particular company would not provide this seemingly simple request, and it seemed as though they didn’t have this information either. This is a company that makes cooked diets so their response was that comparing their diets to kibble was apples and oranges... is this accurate? Thank you.

Yes, I would think this is a red flag. Any reputable company would provide that information. No, that's not accurate. It doesn't matter if the food is cooked or kibble, they should know the caloric distribution.

Dry pet foods come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Accordingly, the weight of one diet that fills a cup may not be the same as the weight of a cup of another diet. If you are purchasing a high quality pet food brand such as Science Diet, Royal Canin or Purina, to name a few, these diets are usually very well tested for weight and calories per cup. If you have any concerns, you can always speak to your veterinarian and request a diet-specific measuring cup with which to feed your pet. You can also call the toll-free number for the pet food manufacturer if you have any questions or concerns about their product.

Dry food labels give the amount of nutrients that are contained in the finished product. Period. Be aware that pet food marketing is a serious business. And unfortunately, buzzwords and trend diets are generally used to sway your views towards whatever product is attempting to be sold to you, and these buzzwords don't have your pet's best interest at heart. Trying to figure out kcals to calories on a can of cat food. A 3 oz can that is 76 kcals, Google says 76000, cant be 76000 calories ,or is just 76 calories a can? I stink big time in math, just trying to get my 15 n 13 lb indoor only cats down a few
I understand your math and logic for conversions but for some reason it is not needed with pet food! If it says 76 kcal, it is noted as 76 calories! Canned food is the best way to get them to lose weight

My 30 dachshund needs to lose 10 lbs. The diet food label reads 306 kcal ME/can. Am I to assume that the entire can of dog food has 306 kcal? Or is there another calculation I need?
Yes that’s the calories in the can. On dry food it will have the kcal/cup. I usually recommend diet dry food with added vegetables to fill him up rather than wet food. I like dry food with 250kcaks/cup or less, and measure each meal. You can give canned pumpkin, green beans, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. Some dogs prefer the vegetables cooked and mixed in with a little fat free chicken broth. Hills has a metabolic diet that is very effective to use for a diet also. That is heavy for a dachshund so I’m glad you are putting him on a diet. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for Oskar.

I feed 1/2 cub kibbles at 8:30 AM. Then, 1 packet wet food around 1 PM. Again, 1/2 cup kibbles at 9 PM. Am I doing right or not?

I have an overweight cat 14lbs. I'm confused by food labels as they read like such: calorie content 1197 kcal/kg. 102kcal/can. Does this mean 1 can is 102 calories?
Food labels can be extremely confusing! The 1197 kcal/kg is a calculation of calories on a "dry matter" basis, which allows you to easily compare a compatible calorie count between different brands and types (wet or dry) of foods. Since canned foods have a very high water content, there is a much lower calorie count per can. To answer your question, yes, this means that there are 102 calories per can of food. Your vet will help you to determine Kitty's ideal body weight so that you can appropriately feed her for your weight loss goals. I hope this helps!

Hello! All great questions and comments - and you're right, there's a lot of conflicting information out there regarding food. Some of the information you're going to find is based on personal preference or a value bias. Corn is a good source of digestible carbs, fatty acids, and protein - but these things are better digested in dogs than in cats (who are obligate carnivores), and some people prefer to minimize grains, so those people might state corn is "bad".... in my opinion, the focus on grains is based more on trends in human nutrition than evidence-based pet nutrition. Statements regarding what pet foods are "good" vs "bad" will also come from personal preference...your vet can probably explain what made them state that Purina is better than Merrick, and another vet might have their own input on the matter. I do personally like both Purina and Hills because I find their products consistent, reliable, and I like that those companies put a lot of their profits back into nutrit

Is Annamaet a good dog food brand? I'm specifically looking at Annamaet Grain-Free Reduced Fat Dry Dog Food for my dogs that can't handle a lot of fat.
It's an OK food brand, but it doesn't seem to formulate their foods to tailor the calorie content to the specific life stage of the dog. This is concerning if you want to avoid too much fat, because this food will likely have too much fat. Whether it's grain-free or not will not affect the fat levels. The most important thing on that bag is a tiny bit of writing under the guaranteed analysis called the AAFCO statement. This statement tells you what actual research went into making the product. Below is a link to an article that will help explain this more and give some other info about feeding your dog: https://www.petcoach.co/article/what-to-look-for-when-choosing-your-pet-s-food/ I recommend feeding Sirius a brand of food that has an AAFCO statement indicating that it is for adult maintenance. Sirius should be fed an adult food and the fat levels will be less. If the dogs continue to have issues with the fat in the food, then I would recommend taking them for a vet consult.

The foods I'm considering for my dog are natural balance lid and Merrick lid. Natural balance is 20% protein and would provide between 11 and 13 grams of protein per day. The Merrick is 25% protein and would provide about 16 grams of protein per day.

Overweight dogs need less calories compared to an underweight dog or one of ideal body conditions. Hello. I think there may really be a need for your "smart" dog food bowl. Ideally, it would be connected to a program where the owner can input breed, age, neuter status, weight, activity level, type of food, kcal per cup of food & I am sure something I am leaving out to calculate the total calories required to maintain a sensible weight in that pet. The less the owner has to do, the better. I do not think it is necessary nor advisable to weigh water as you do not want to make judgements about water intake. Your program should be able to adjust for a wet vs dry diet, as wet diets are by nature, less nutritionally dense because of the water already added. Good luck & thanks for using Boop by Petco.
