My dog scratches chest and hindquarters, no fleas. What's wrong?

Hi, I am so sorry I cannot afford to take my dog to a vet. She has been scratching a lot lately, scratching her upper chest area and also nibbling at her hind quarters. I have not seen any sign of fleas with a flea comb. She did have fleas a couple of years ago and I gave her a good flea medication monthly for 3 months and the fleas disappeared. I only want to give her that medication if it is absolutely necessary because of it's possible side effects. (sarolaner) Thank you so much!

It could also be that Hazel has allergies or mites causing the itching. She really does need to see a vet to have this diagnosed and treated. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends to afford the vet, and if the vet will take payment plans.

This scratching can be caused by fleas, mites, ringworm, or allergies. If Roxie isn't up to date on her flea treatment, I can give you one for her. First, I would give her Capstar. Ouch! That definitely looks like an allergic reaction that is trending toward a bacterial infection with the big red welts. I'd have Hazel brought into your vet for an exam of the spots, and antibiotics as needed. In the meantime, keeping her from licking or chewing at the spot with an Elizabethan (cone) collar or T-shirt over the spot is best to avoid allowing more bacteria into the irritation. Food allergies can cause red welts like this along the inner thighs and bellies, as well as environmental allergens. Your vet will likely suggest a general antihistamine/allergy med to try first, unless they suspect a food allergy, in which case a food trial may help as well.

Poor Hefe sounds miserable. It could be he has something else causing his itching such as allergies or mites. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain what is going on. He really does have to see a vet. You've tried treating this for weeks with no success, and you cannot leave him like this, it's not fair to him. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. My dog is scratching her chest and it’s atarting to bleed.
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Harley. I am sorry to hear that he is so itchy! Allergies are a very common problem this time of year. This is even more likely if he was even a little bit itchy this time last year. Fleas will also make a dog as can food or contact allergies. Skin infections will have the same result. I would start by bathing him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to give him some relief. He will need to see his veterinarian though. He may require skin tests to rule out ringworm or mites. If these tests are both negative, then allergies are more likely. He will most likely need an antibiotic and a medication to control the itch. There are several new allergy medications available for itchy dogs. They are extremely effective. Apoquel is a tablet that is given once or twice daily. Poor Lola! I recommend to try to have her examined as soon as you can get her in. Certain clinics like Banfield and VCA will offer free exams to new clients with a coupon you can print off line. This will help to save some money. Certain types of flea prevention can kill manage and you may be able to buy them month by month so it wouldn't be too expensive. Otherwise things that can help relieve itching include continuing the antihistamine, baths with oatmeal type pet shampoo and starting her on an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs. The key is to get the underlying condition addressed quickly. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

My dog keeps itching 24/7 and I gave her a flea bath and no fleas came off of her, she doesn't look like she has dry skin or anything so idk what it would be. I also took her to the vet the other day and now she is itching worse than she did.
Most often excessive skin itchiness is due to allergies or mange. The allergy could be caused by anything Zoey is in frequent contact with (plants, pollen, chemicals at home and outside, carpets, dust, food she eats and more). Please, take her back to your vets for another check. She will most likely benefit from medications to reduce the itchiness that your vet will prescribe. Your vet may want to examine skin scrapes under the microscope to rule out mange.
