Dog sick after eating chocolate, bloody stool. Can't afford vet now.

My mom dog got a hold of a 2pack of triple chocolate muffins about 2weeks ago. After it happened we immediately tried to wash his mouth out. He's been fine til these last 2days. He's been laying around and not doing much. Thursday we noticed that he wasn't trying to eat or drink and that's unusual for him. He hasn't wanted to go outside to use the bathroom or play with my mom other dog. He pooped some blood last night and today. I won't be able to take him to the vet til Friday when I get paid

    Unfortunately there is nothing you can do for Dexter at home. This is a medical emergency because he ate a lot of chocolate, enough to cause a moderate to severe toxic reaction. Signs of this include tremors, seizures, and collapse. He has to have veterinary care now, including IV fluids and medications. If he develops seizures, he will need anti-seizure medication. I'm not sure why you can't take him to a vet, but if it's because of money, I would see if you can borrow some from family and friends to afford the vet, and I can give you some resources that may help you afford it. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants.  The Onyx & Breezy Foundation has many programs including helping people with medical bills. They are a good resource for information.
 Brown Dog Foundation provides funding to families with a sick pet that would likely respond to treatment, but due to circumstances, there is not enough money immediately available to pay. IMOM is dedicated to insure that no companion animal has to be euthanized simply because their caretaker is financially challenged. This may be due to a colitis likely to be secondary to the chocolate ingestion. As a first approach, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice lethargy or inappetence. This sounds very bad. Bloody stools means there is significant inflammation in the colon. Common causes include hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, parvo virus, and distemper virus. If he is vomiting at the same time, he really needs vet care to prevent life-threatening dehydration. Try to force him to drink small amounts of water or pedialyte every 2 hours to give fluids without possibly causing vomiting. I am sorry Chico is sick. Chocolate at high doses can cause sever gastric upset. I am concerned that the continued vomiting will cause dehydration and issues with kidney function. I would recommend taking Chico to the vet for medications to stop the vomiting and rehydrate him. Also I would start an over the counter anti acid to help calm down his stomach. You can try a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice once his vomiting has stopped. I hope that helps and Chico feels better soon

Poor Chooti! If she is vomiting blood and cannot walk this is a medical emergency and she needs to see a veterinarian immediately. She likely needs to be placed on IV fluids and other supportive care to treat the chocolate toxicity. I'm concerned from the signs you are describing that the amount of chocolate she ingested could be life threatening so she really needs hospitalization for treatment. Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Scooter. One ferrero rocher shouldn't cause serious problems, but it can cause stomach upset. I can give you a home remedy for him to see if that helps. Withhold food tonight, then in the morning feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Hello, thank you for your question about Brody. Chocolate can lead to toxicity in dogs depending on the amount ingested and the weight of the dog. The initial signs of toxicity are often vomiting/diarrhea due to irritation of the stomach/intestinal lining. With severe irritation the small blood vessels in the stomach/intestinal wall can rupture leading to blood being present in the vomit. Depending on the amount of chocolate ingested other possible signs of toxicity are possible such as agitation, elevated heart rate, tremors ,or seizures. If the chocolate was ingested about 18 hours ago I think it is unlikely that Brody will experience these symptoms at this time. Since Brody has been vomiting for some time now, I would recommend having Brody evaluated by a veterinarian so that they can perform an examination and discuss the need for additional diagnostics or treatments, such as anti-nausea medication.
