My dog is searching for her lost sister. How can I help her grieve?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 35 lbs

How do we help a grieving dog? Earlier today we unfortunately had to put down our baby girl. She was young but every vet she saw insisted it be done as it was the only humane thing to do. Eclipse has since been searching for her. She keeps trying to go outside, and will stare where her sisters bed used to be. Shes eating and drinking normally but emotionally seems very distressed. What can we do to help her? Unfortunately we can't show her her sisters body which was reccomended to us.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your dog! Please accept my condolences for your loss. Give Eclipse lots of love and attention. Take her out to favorite places, play with her more often, cuddle with her as much as possible. This will help with the grieving.

I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your puppy. Your best option for the remaining puppy is to exercise her every day and focus on entertaining her with games and training session. Stick to a routine. Mourning is normal but should pass within a couple weeks. I hope this helps.

I'm so sorry for your loss! Pets grieve, just as we do. Try to keep your dog's daily routine as normal as possible, while giving your dog some extra attention and exercise as a distraction. Ultimately, grief takes time to process for our four legged friends, just as it does for us.

Dogs are emotional and can become distressed / sad when a loved one passes away. Unfortunately, it just takes time. There are some things you can try to help ease the stress for Sadie. I would recommend the below products and see if these help. I would also take her out more for walks and socialize her and consider taking her to the dog park as well to interact with other dogs. Just recently I lost my fur-boy and he was a short-hair domestic and a constant companion of my little Chihuahua whenever I went to work each day. Now my little one is missing his brother and constantly looks for him not understanding his big brother
I am so sorry to hear this! It is always sad to lose a 4 legged family members but it is also heart breaking to watch their house mates suffer the same grievance. I would make sure to give your dog plenty of extra TLC and spend extra time with him when you can. I would also consider put a calming collar on him like adaptil to help calm him while you are away. There are also calming chews you could try like composure or the prescription version composure pro. At the end of the day, it is going to take time for him to grieve just like us. Unfortunately, some do not completely heal until they have a new companion to be with. I hope this helps and please know you are in my thoughts.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your pup. Depression and mourning are very normal in dogs, especially after the loss of a close companion. It may be that Aysha needs some more time to mourn, and some extra attention, care and loving would help. Sticking to a schedule can also help her return to a more normal routine. If she is still having lots of issues, speaking with a local vet or veterinary behaviorist to see if medication would be helpful may also be beneficial for her.

My wife and I just wanted once again to say thank you for trying to help us with our girl miltida,that passed away yesterday on her bed in our bedroom where maltida and her brother Haden slept ever night,and We think he knows that he's sister is gone
Thank you for the update. I am so sorry about your baby girl. The grief process can vary between dogs. It could be days or it could be months. What you are doing so far with Haden is great. Basically, continue with your daily routine so the rest of his life doesn't change. Dogs can also sense our grief so his sadness may improve when yours does. Again, it all takes time. This doesn't offend me at all! I'm so sorry for your loss, please accept my condolences. Give Cookie lots of attention and love. Play with him more, give him his favorite treats. This will help him during this time. As for remembering your dog, I recommend getting him cremated. Set up his box of ashes with a framed picture of him to make him a memorial. I hope this helps!

Hello, and thanks for your question. I'm sorry to hear that your older dog is likely nearing the end of her life, and it's great that you're thinking about Derek and how he may cope. In short, all dogs respond a little differently. Some go through a period of obvious mourning with a decreased appetite and lethargy, while others don't. Dogs are pretty resilient and flexible, and likely Derek will do ok, even if he needs some time to mourn and adjust to the changes without his buddy there. Just give him some extra love and attention, and provide some extra stimulation through bonding activities, such as play and walks. Usually within a week or two they start to adjust to the "new normal."
