Is my senior dog with worsening seizures nearing the end or suffering?

My dog is 10 yrs old. He has epilepsy since early age. Vet checks him and blood levels. He is on keppra phenob & potassium bromide. His seizures are now about weekly and he had a bad one tonight and when she was incontinent, his stool was loose but chunky mucousy and slightly Orange. His urine was dark and color too. Do u think he is nearing the end or suffering? I just need someone to be straight w/ me...txs Diana

Hi Diana. I'm very sorry this is happening to your dog. It is very concerning that his seizures are getting worse, and I think the best thing to do is take him into a vet immediately. He may need an adjustment of his medication, but it may be time to let him go. Please take him into a vet now.

Hello. Please do not be afraid to see your vet. It sounds like a reassessment needs to be made. Cushing's is not a static disease & adjustments in medication sometimes does need to be made. In addition, other endocrine problems can appear that will need to be treated. Only you can say when it is time to say goodby & let her go. We, as vets, can only guide you in your decision. Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. I recommend contacting his veterinarian. He will likely need to start another medication to control his seizures. Phenobarbital, potassium bromide and zonisamide are common choices. However, your veterinarian will know his medical history and which would be the best choice. Being able to have his seizures better controlled will improve his quality of life. I hope this information helps!

From your description of Dudley's symptoms, it sounds like seizures to me as well and dogs aren't necessarily always groggy afterwards. In a senior dog, I would be concerned it's a sign of something serious such as a tumor (brain or insulinoma for example), and I do recommend a visit to the vet for a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis to start. Should he have another one of those episodes before you get a chance to take him into the vet, video it and I can give you some tips to handle it. If Dudley seizures again before you can seek vet care: - Don't put your hands near his mouth - Keep some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to spray on the pads of the feet for cooling - Monitor him at all times during the seizure to ensure that he cannot hurt himself by crashing into furniture, etc - If the seizure continues for more than 5 minutes, seek emergency care immediately I would make an appointment for him in the next couple of days. The most common symptoms of a full-blown seizure in older dogs include drooling, violent muscle spasms, running movements of his legs, loss of bladder and bowel control and possible vomiting. So the incontinence may be part of the seizure. But anyway in a situation like this you NEED to get your dog to your vet as quickly as you can, to stop seizure if persistent or any more seizures and start diagnosis of the underlying cause The leading causes of seizures in older dogs changes and while epilepsy is the leading cause of seizures in younger dogs (under 6 years old), in senior dogs the leading causes include brain tumors, liver or kidney disease, trauma, poisoning, under active thyroid gland (hypothyroidism).

Seizures that are starting at this age are usually very bad news, i would strongly recommend taking her to the nearest emergency center right away, bear in mind this is likely a terminal condition but you can't leave her at home seizing without getting treated.

An 11 year old dog suddenly having seizures activity is very concerning. Especially if they are clustering like you describe. There are several possible causes such as low blood glucose from xylitol ingestion, a tumor on the pancreas releasing too much insulin, or something even more concerning such as a brain tumor. I would highly encourage you have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. It was unclear to if you were previously at the emergency clinic due to this issue or something else. However, if it was due to this then I would call the veterinarian and ask if you can have some diazepam to give this evening to see if you can keep her seizure free until tomorrow. So sorry that Marley is having this issue. I really don't know the answer to your question. I suppose it could be the end but I could not possibly tell you that without examine Marley myself. I suggest you get him to a vet for an exam. You need to find out what is wrong before assuming it is the end for him. There may a simple explanation and there may be some medication that could help him. I think it would be wise to get him examined as soon as you can get him in for an exam. Best wishes.

It sounds like seizure activity to me. Not all seizures are grand mal where the dog falls over and starts paddling. I suggest you get him back to the vet for a follow-up and discuss putting him on some anti-seizure medication. Occasionally severe pain can cause these types of symptoms. It is possible that the gallstones may be causing him some random pain. Most often though, gallstones do not cause any problems in dogs like they do in people. Again, talk to your vet about your options.
