My dog has lepto, is vomiting, and won't eat. Can she recover?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 10 years and 5 months old | 44 lbs

Do dogs always die from leptospirosis? Our m uch loved 10 year old mongrel Maizy is starving herself to death. We have treatment from the vet - doxyc., but she swallows and then brings it all back in slime. We cannot get any food down her at all, for more than 2 weeks now. She even brings water back as slime too. She is vaccinated against lepto. & just about everything else too. What can we do? I think we may be too late. She is becoming very weak, not surprisingly,

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Maizy. I'm sorry she is so sick. Dogs do not always die from lepto but there will be those dogs that are quite sick and cannot make it. I would take her back into the vet immediately to get intensive care with them there including IV fluids and injectable medications to try to save her. I hope this helps.

I'm so sorry to hear that Oreo has leptospirosis. Fortunately, most dogs (80-90%) do very well with treatment and fully recover. Dogs that are sick from leptospirosis should start to improve quickly once they are started on antibiotics, so if Oreo is not starting to feel better within 24 hours (or feels worse at any point), be sure to contact your veterinarian in case he needs additional treatment. My puppy has lepto...been on doxi and amoxicillan for 3 day..shes not getting better..she drinking and peeing but no food or pooping. How long b4 I see any type of improvement?
I'm sorry Sadie has lepto! Recovery often takes two to four weeks, and because it is such a serious disease that wipes out a dog physically, it will take longer to see any kind of improvement. I would give it at least two weeks, and if you still aren't seeing any kind of improvement, I would take her back into the vet. Please keep in mind that having lepto doesn't make her immune to future reinfection, so when she recovers from this and is health again, I would get her vaccinated against it.

If you are referring to the infection leptospirosis, then yes this can be cured though it normally requires a long course of therapy and patients unfortunately can die from this condition if not treated appropriately and in a timely fashion. Some patients need to be in the hospital if they are doing poorly most of the time when the liver is severely affected. Good luck and have a great day!

My dog has leptospirosis and still isn't eating after 3 weeks. We have him on meds. We called the vet a couple of days ago because he is still lethargic and wasn't eating a lot and they put him in pain meds. He drinks lots of water but refuses to eat
Take him in to be rechecked by your veterinarian. Blood work should be submitted to assess major organ function, especially liver and kidney function. Both organs can be affected by leptospirosis. Damage to either may result in a build up of toxins in the blood that would affect appetite. Luke may need supportive care (hospitalization, IV fluids, parenteral nutrition, etc.) until he is eating on his own. In the meantime, you can offer baby food warmed up to stimulate his appetite. Mix in some unflavored PediaLyte with his water as well.

Hello, sorry to hear about Ella. It sounds like she may need continued medical support to get over the allergic reaction she had to her vaccines. This may be in the form of fluids, benadryl or potentially more steroids. She should also have her pancreas enzymes checked to ensure she is not having pancreatitis. The lepto vaccine has definitely been associated with adverse reactions. It would be best to have Ella evaluated by a veterinarian if she is not doing well. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hi, its oreo's 5th day since he was diagnosed with leptospirosis. He's temperature is fluctuating. Lowest temp was 36 degrees celcius but now he is back to 37.6. He is also bloated. But he is still taking antibiotics doxyxycline and also supplements
How is Oreo doing now? If he isn't improving at this point, please take him to your vet ASAP. At this point (over 1 week) he should definitely be showing signs of improvement. As for his temperature, it is not typical to see a low body temperature with leptospirosis. We will occasionally see a fever. When dogs are very very sick their temperature will often drop and this is concerning. However, He may "normally" be a closer to 37 degrees (most dogs are about 38-39 degrees Celsius. Please feel free to post on the forum again if you have further questions, typically you will get a faster response than we were able to provide for you this time. Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. Certainly with values as elevated as these are I am concerned about the kidney impairment due to this infection. Her protein is now on the decline as well which indicates further that her kidneys are now leading to a protein loss. Winter really needs to be hospitalized on continuous 24 hour IV fluids to hep reduce these levels and continue the antibiotic IV therapy until she responds as well as anti-vomiting medications to keep her comfortable. This infection does not respond right away in every case but it is very important that she receive adequate IV fluid therapy and antibiotics. I hope Winter gets better soon. While not considered a "core" vaccine, the leptospirosis vaccine is highly recommended for dogs who may be at risk for contracting leptospirosis, as it is a disease that can lead to agonizing deaths in both animals and humans. Hi there and thanks for posting on PetCoach, I am sorry to hear of Cooper's diagnosis. This can be very hard to say without seeing Cooper first. The prognosis does depend on if the disease was caught early or late, and what treatments Cooper is currently receiving. Younger animals generally fair a bit worse with a leptospirosis infection than older animals. Typically, prognosis is better if caught early and not so good if caught late in the game as the leptospirosis bacteria can cause organ damage in late or advanced stages.
