My dog keeps licking a red, growing spot. Is it ringworm or hot spot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 16 lbs

My dog has an area that he continues to lick that is getting larger and more red with time. Could this be something like ringworm or just a hot spot that shouldn’t be worried about? Please help. How should this be treated?

Clearly this area is bothering Buster, and it could be due to allergies, a hot spot, or a skin infection. You need to have him seen by a vet to get this diagnosed and treated. I'd take him into the vet in the morning.

From the picture, it could be that Lucky has a hot spot or ringworm. I'd give his vet a call today to make him an appointment. The vet can diagnose what is causing this spot, and can treat him for it. I'd put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking at it, which you can make at home or buy at a pet store. To be safe, do not touch the area in case it's ringworm because that's contagious to humans as well. Best of luck. http://dogsaholic.com/care/homemade-dog-cone.html

It looks like he has a skin infection. You could try over the counter Vetricyn spray and see if that helps. If it doesn’t resolve or you notice additional lesions then he should be examined and treated by a vet. He may need an oral antibiotic to treat the infection.
